Texas College, a UNCF-member institution, was founded in 1894 by a group of CME

ministers and currently offers 12 baccalaureate degree programs. As one of the oldest
institutions in east Tyler, Texas College recently celebrated it's 120th anniversary.
One of the schools special features is that of an Alternative Certification Teacher
Education program for persons who have already earned a bachelors degree. Learn

Developing a Stronger College Pipeline

African American students are less likely to meet key benchmarks for college
readiness. A report released by ACT reveals that more work needs to be done and
here are two reasons why:
1) Only five percent of all 2014 ACT-tested African American high school graduates
met all four of the ACT College Readiness benchmarks for credit-bearing first-year
college courses in English composition, college algebra, biology and the social
sciences.
2) At the same time, 17 percent of African American high school students met only
one benchmark and 62 percent met none.

Mathematics at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts earlier this year.
"Naturally, this is a dream come true. I can't think of anything I'd rather be doing than
playing in the NFL and getting my Ph.D in math from MIT. I've always aspired to do
both, but I never imagined I'd be doing both at the same time." Tag high school and

How to Get More Black Men into Stem

"Other young males with similar backgrounds and experiences offered to work with
these new students. They stressed the importance of listening to academic advice on
course selection and study habits, learning time-management skills, taking advantage
of tutoring, and working with others. Most significant, the older males have helped the
younger ones understand the need to ask for help and accept it when offered. This
extra support has been effective, and many more of these transfer students are now
completing STEM degrees."
