COLUMBA CATHOLIC CHURCH

SAN DIEGO

November 27, 2016

First Sunday of Advent
Dear Parishioners:

Youth Outreach

This week we begin a new liturgical year by

entering into the season of Advent. During this season we
look forward in three ways: we look forward to a
celebration of the birthday of Christ on Christmas day;
we look forward to a new spiritual birth of Christ in our
lives; and we also look forward to the second coming of
Christ. During Advent, we place ourselves in union with
the people of the Old Testament by longing for the
coming of Christ, and we share their spirit of hoping and
longing for the coming of salvation into the lives of
Gods people.
The most common symbol during the season of
Advent is the Advent wreath. It is part of our longstanding Catholic tradition. However, the actual origins
are uncertain. There is evidence of pre-Christian
Germanic peoples using wreathes with lit candles during
the cold and dark December days as a sign of hope in the
future warm and extended-sunlight days of Spring. By the
Middle Ages, the Christians adapted this tradition and
used Advent wreathes as part of their spiritual preparation
for Christmas. The symbolism of the Advent wreath is
beautiful. The wreath is made of various evergreens,
signifying continuous life. The circle of the wreath, which
has no beginning or end, symbolizes the eternity of God,
the immortality of the soul, and the everlasting life found
in Christ. The four candles represent the four weeks of
Advent. A tradition is that each week represents one
thousand years, to sum to the 4,000 years from Adam and
Eve until the Birth of the Savior. Three candles are purple
and one is rose. The purple candles in particular
symbolize the prayer, penance, and preparatory sacrifices
and good works undertaken at this time. The rose candle
is lit on the third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday, which is the
Sunday of rejoicing, because the faithful have arrived at
the midpoint of Advent. The light again signifies Christ,
the Light of the world. The tradition of the Advent
Wreath is not reserved for Sundays at Church but I
encourage every family to make or purchase their own
and use it as a form of family prayer, perhaps before the
evening meal or before bed.
During the season of Advent we do penance in
preparation for the Christmas season. We try to better our
lives so that we might be more fully prepared to celebrate
the birth of Jesus. Therefore, I invite you to mark your
calendars for our parish celebration of the Sacrament of
Reconciliation, which will take place on Monday,
December 12th at 6:00 p.m. We will have a number of
priests from the neighboring parishes available that
evening to assist with this celebration.

The Youth Group and Young Adult Group are

planning an outreach to the homeless downtown
on December 7. They are requesting donations of
socks, jackets, blankets, toiletries and bottled
water. If you can participate in any way or would
like more information, contact Robin Keator at
619-922-7941.
