Cheyenne Jackson
By Mark Peikert

How did you get your Equity and SAG-AFTRA cards?

Equity was Babes in Arms at the Village Theatre in
Issaquah, Washington. They had an apprentice program
where you could earn points or you could just be offered an
Equity contract. I think I was 25. It felt very legitimate, and it
was helpful to have that before coming to New York. And then
SAG was for United 93.
What advice would you give your younger self? Relax. Just
fucking relax. Take a breath. Its all going to be OK. I think of
all the consternation and all the worry and what does this
mean and will they like me and is this what they want? Always
trying to fit into what they want of youI really got caught up
in that after having a little modicum of success in New York.
And you start to veer further away from what you are. When
kids come up and say, What should I do? I say, Be yourself.
Dont try to do it like a CW show youre watching. Just literally
be yourself.
What was your most memorable survival job? The first to
pop in my mind: I worked at a paper mill. An actual mill, a pulp
mill that made paper in Iowa. I worked at a really gross place
called Grizzly Pizza Drive-in and Ribs. I was a bank teller. I ran
childcare at a health club, and people thought I was just one
of the dads. And tons of food service.

The busy stage and screen actor Cheyenne Jackson

is giving fans plenty to look forward to lately. In
addition to his new album, Renaissance (based on
his acclaimed solo show Music of the Mad Men Era),
fans can enjoy Jackson in the new season of American
Horror Story and the much-anticipated, star-studded
film adaptation of Michael John LaChiusas Hello
Again, in which he sings opposite Audra McDonald.
We checked in with Jackson about his career,
advice, and forgetting the lyrics to Being Alive.

ITS EASY TO DO THE BASIC THING OR YOU GET SCARED AND YOU GO BEIGE AND
GIVE THE MOST BLAH CHOICES, BUT THEN YOU BLEND IN WITH EVERYONE ELSE.

What is your worst audition story? I was auditioning to

be Hugh Jackmans standby in Boy From Oz. Id done
the Elvis musical [All Shook Up] and I had a little bit of
buzz around me, so they thought, Oh, thisll be a good fit.
Id worked on the material and I had some confidence, [but
then] they wanted me to sing from my book and, as you
know, theres a lot of shit in your book you dont look at for
months. And they said, Why dont you sing Being Alive?
And I had forgotten it was in there! My heart was racing
and my face was flushed, and I started. Somebody And
I started it again. Somebody I went and looked at the
lyrics and theyre all exchanging looks and whispering shit to
one another, and for the third time, I go, Somebody And
everybody behind the desk went, Hold me too close! They
all sang it for me. And that was it.

Mulan is about to undergo

Doss justice by visiting his hometown, handling his personal items,

and getting to the essence of who
this man was. The performance
has already gotten thumbs-up
approval from family and friends of
the late Doss, who died in 2006.
Thats who the guy is: Hes a
guy who reaches for a profound
level, and he has a huge amount of
intelligence and a lot of heart, too,
Gibson says of Garfield. That guy is
made to be a great actor.

[Meet the Maker]

Mel Gibson, Hacksaw Ridge

BY BENJAMIN LINDSAY

THIS STORY OF HEROISM IS

just utterly undeniable, says Academy Awardwinning director and
actor Mel Gibson. Hes speaking of
the astonishing true story of World
War II army medic Desmond T.
Doss, who refused to bear arms and
kill the enemy during his time on the
battlefield at Okinawa, Japan, all
while saving 75 of his injured comrades. He is in history books today
as the first conscientious objector
presented with the Medal of Honor.
On Nov. 4, Doss gets his longoverdue Hollywood treatment with
Hacksaw Ridge, star Andrew
Garfields ticket to major awards
consideration and Gibsons first
directorial effort since 2006s
Apocalypto.
Generally speaking, I generate

10 backstage 11.03.16

my own stuff, and this was not that

this came to me from [producers]
Bill Mechanic and David Permut....
A very good script. It ticked all my
boxes, Gibson says. It went through
to my heart and then to my head. I
found it a very compelling and moving story about something very
basic, which is a guy who actually
rises above everything and maintains
his equilibrium and his higher self
during an experience that reduces
most men to the level of animals.
The Passion of the Christ
director even admits to crying
upon first read. I figured if its
doing it to a cold-hearted guy like
me, maybe an audience would like
to experience this.
With the power of a true story,
enthralling depictions of wartime,

and an impressive ensemble at its

back, the ambitious and inspiring
Hacksaw Ridge marks a return
to form for Gibson. But with time
comes change, and he says he had
to adapt to todays industry after
being permitted less time and fewer
resources than he was for Braveheart 20 years ago.
The nature of the film game has
changed now, Gibson notes. Unless
the guys wearing spandex tights
youre not going to be given a huge
budget or a lot of time to execute if
youre not doing comic-book stuff.
Luckily, Gibson cast Garfield
as his real-life superhero, and he
rose to the challenges of portraying Doss in the grisly elements of a
re-created war zone. Garfield has
previously spoken on efforts to do

Teresa Palmer and Andrew Garfield in Hacksaw Ridge

While its Garfields show, Hacksaw Ridge also offers a slew of fine
supporters, including Sam Worthington, Rachel Griffiths, Hugo Weaving,
and Vince Vaughn in a dramatic turn
as Sgt. Howell. Gibson says that he
rarely holds auditions for his films,
but he didnt hire any duds on
Hacksaw thanks to one-on-one
meetings with prospective parties,
sometimes grabbing coffee with 10
actors vying for the same role.
Generally speaking, Ill just sit
and talk about the weather. You get
an idea of who the person is and
what theyre capable of within 10 or
15 minutes of chitchat, Gibson says.
This come-as-you-are approach
continued while shooting, making
for what Gibson calls a congenial
set, despite the films tight schedule
and grueling subject matter.
I know what its like to be an actor
in films, so I empathize with all their
concerns. I listen to them. I certainly
give them room to do whatever it is
they think needs to be done because
theyve thought about it and theyre
coming from their truth, he says.
All the guys I chose, I hired them
for a reason. I was just glad to be in
a conference of experts and to be
able to bounce my ideas off of theirs
and see what they gave me.... I know
what it is to be in their shoes.

Stage Your Dreams

I L L U S T R AT I O N : H A N N A B A R C Z Y K ; P I E R C E : T O N Y E I S E N H O W E R

MARK ROGERS

BY SPENCER LIFF
IVE ALWAYS KNOWN I WANTED
to choreograph, from my earliest
memories of being in show biz. I
got my start as a child actor in the
national tour of The Will Rogers Follies, directed and choreographed
by the legendary Tommy Tune. Id
watch him run the rehearsal room
with flair and knew that was meant
for me, a bossy 7-year-old at the
time. Years later, at 23 and with five
Broadway shows under my belt, I
felt the sooner that I started taking
steps to become part of the creative
team, the better.
Heres my advice on how to navigate that process if youve decided
that choreography is your passion
(and let me tell you, it is 100 times
more competitive than being a
dancer).
The first step is to become an
BACKSTAGE.COM

assistant or associate. Find a choreographer that you have access to

who inspires you. Do you like their
work or the way they collaborate
with dancers in a rehearsal room?
Do they treat their current assistant
with respect? Ask to be part of the
preproduction process, or be a second assistant; offer your time and
make yourself valuable but not in a
needy, outside the window holding
a boom box sort of way.
Next, try to work with as many top
choreographers as possible. There
is so much knowledge to gain from
each persons process. I absorbed
what I liked and noted what I didnt
like, and it began to shape who Id
be as a choreographer.
Dont get stuck assisting for too
long. Start choreographing things
on your own: anything! Your choreo

brain is like a machineyou just

have to start the engine and get
it going. I took any job I could get
in the beginning, working for little
money in regional theaters, on
cruise ships, and on low-budget
music videos just to get experience,
all while still dancing on the side
to supplement my income. Once I
gained some confidence, I began
to formulate a trajectory of where I
wanted my new career to go.
One of the toughest challenges
will be getting people to see you in
a new light. Producers took time to
take me seriously as a young choreographer. The industry wants to
brand you, put you in a category; I
needed the industry to stop seeing
me as an ensemble dancer. That
led to an extremely clear fork in the
road. Everyone thought I was crazy,
but at 24 years old, after winning
the Astaire Award for best male
dancer on Broadway, I walked away
from my dance career.
It was scary and left me with no
safety net. But I remember very
clearly sitting in the audience as I
watched a piece Id choreographed
onstage one night. My heart was
racing. It reminded me of the adrenaline rush I had when I first started
performing, and that was the only
affirmation I needed to know I was
ready to go all in.

Your choreo brain is

like a machineyou
just have to start the
engine and get it going.
Whether or not you choose to
head down the path of choreography is your own discovery to
make. It will be very challenging and
extremely difficult. But hey, if youre
a bossy 7-year-old, youre on the
right track already.

A two-time Emmy-nominated choreographer for So You Think You

Can Dance, Liff choreographed
the current Broadway revival of
Falsettos and the national tour of
Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Pierce
By Casey Mink

Actor MICHAEL JOSEPH PIERCE

has booked several gigs through
Backstage, including leading and
principal roles in feature filmsbut
it was his commercial shoot for Glucose Health that was his favorite.
It was held at Savi Ranch Studio
in Orange County and the people at
the audition were extremely personable, says Pierce. I felt very much
at ease.
Pierce began using Backstage
this spring and he now checks it
multiple times each week. As a
result of that diligence, the work has
continued to come in. I keep getting called in to audition and getting
cast with great projects that will
really shine on my reel, he says.
Because Backstage can be
personalized for each actor, Pierce
has been able to easily seek out the
kinds of roles for which he is best

Lunch can be an

[Secret Agent Man]

Your
Guide to
Lunch

unch is for
wimps.
Thats a line
from Wall
Street. Gordon Gekko says it
as a way of demonstrating his
strength, but every agent who
has seen that film recognizes the
line for what it really is: ignorant.
You see, lunch is an important
part of my day. It serves many
purposes. On the most basic
level, its a 90-minute break that
allows me to fuel my body and
energize my mind. Thats a biological need. Starving yourself
doesnt serve you.
Lunch is also time I can use
to catch up on my reading. And
no, Im not talking about some

12 backstage 11.03.16

dopey novel about a boring

businessman who likes to tie
up his girlfriend. Im talking
about scripts. Its hard to make
time, but real agents try to read
every script they cover. (Thats
an absolute must during pilot
season.) Reading those scripts
allows us to spot opportunities
that arent always obvious in the
breakdown. And, quite frankly, I
like loading scripts on my iPad so
I can read them during lunch. It
sure beats taking them home. My
DVR would get jealous.
The third reason lunch is so
valuable is that agents use that
time to create and nurture professional relationships. In the
world of agenting, lunch is an
art form. Knowing who to break
bread with is a big part of the job.
Did an important client book
a series? Its time for some
sushi. Is there buzz around
town that one of my big earners
is thinking about jumping ship?
Sharing a meal is the perfect
way to mend the relationship. And what if Im trying to
sign an actor who already has

Now, here are the three rules

that govern all lunches:
1. Of the two people meeting
for lunch, the more important
person will keep the other waiting for at least 10 minutes.
2. The person who made the
invitation pays. There are no
exceptions. Any manager who
invites me to lunch and doesnt
pick up the bill will never share a
client with me.
3. Geographic distance determines locationunless youre the
weaker link. Then its on you to
drive halfway across town so we
can have lunch near my office.
And if were equals, our assistants will go back and forth for
an hour trying to find a spot that
is exactly halfway between us.
Lunch can also be an important tool for actors. Inviting your
agent to lunch after signing with
a new company is just about the
smartest thing you can do. Its an
hour of private time. Just dont
squander the opportunity by
talking about yourself. Instead,
try getting to know your agent on
a personal level and give him a
chance to do the same.
Lunch is for wimps? I think
not.

On her leading turn as Patti.
Its a role I never get to play. I get to play
the one who is wild, messy, and says what
she wants. I was always going in for the
girlfriend or sidekick or the type A. This
time I get to have fun. I was really dying
to do that because thats really who I

On dealing with rejection.
This is really a profession of recovery.
Thats the secret. For me, I walk into
every situation thinking that its going to
be a rejection. Thats the reality of most
jobs. Its not about the job that you get,
its about how fast you can recover from
the ones you dont. My job is to audition.
Its not to get the part. If I go in, if I do
everything that I can do and my side of the
street is clean, I won.
On leveling artistic egos.
Everyone who is an actor has the same
fear: that there isnt going to be enough
for me. [That] theres not enough room,
theres not enough work. There is no
reason for ego because at the end of the
day, any one of us can be unemployed
tomorrow. Its the great leveler of all of our
artistic egos.

What advice do you have for people

who want to take their a capella to
the next level? If theyre already
singing in an a capella group,
theyre probably already a great
singer. But if you want to go to
Broadway, you have to act and you
have to dance. Youre probably
already a single threat, but you
have to get double and triple lined
up as well. Its not necessary to try
to become generic. Be yourself.
Let your own light shine, and then
when the right role comes along,
youll be ready for it.

BROADWAYS IN TRANSIT VOCAL ARRANGER

BY MOLLY EICHEL
VOCAL ARRANGER DEKE SHARON IS PROBABLY THE MOST
prominent a capellist in the country. Hes worked on NBCs The Sing-Off,
the blockbuster Pitch Perfect movies, and Lifetimes Pitch Slapped.
But now Sharon is stepping into new terrain: vocal arranging on the first
entirely a cappella Broadway musical, In Transit, about the lives of four
college friends living in New York. Previews are set for Nov. 10 at the Circle
in the Square Theatre.

Actor JAKE HUNTER has an agent,

but he still insists that checking
Backstage several times a week is
vital for all actors. I think [whether
or not] an actor has representation,
they should still self-submit, Hunter
says. Backstage is one of the best
if not the bestself-submission
websites, so I stay active.
Hunter practices what he
preaches. Through Backstage,
he booked a role in The Diary, a
project in which he portrays the
college-age boyfriend of a girl experiencing a breakdown. It was one of
the performers first auditions and
he was understandably nervous.
At the time [of the audition],
the bulk of my experience was on a
baseball field and not in a casting
room, says Hunter. After my
performance, I felt like I booked it.
A few days later, I got the call that
I did!
Sometimes it takes landing that
first job to open the floodgates for
more jobs, a lesson Hunter is now
learning firsthand. I generated
tremendous momentum after my
booking, thanks to Backstage,
he explains. I want to keep my
momentum going and since there
are always great projects posted on
the site, I keep using it!

Do your actors have an a capella

background? There are some
people who do, but there are a lot
of people who dont. Obviously,
people have to have a strong
voice and great pitch. The Ethel
Mermans of the world wouldnt
hack it. You cant just have a strong
lead vocal, you also have to be the
horns in the background, or the
keyboard. But theres something
else thats so important: No divas.
In other productions, you can have
some actors who have attitude, but
in a cappella, theres so much give
and take. The team is essential.
The way everyone interacts has to
be open and has to exist without
ego. A capella is a bunch of dominos. Any one person out of tune
throws the chord off. Imagine the

not just with movements, but with
chords and harmonies.

Why do you think a capella has

come back into the public consciousness? Its the way were
using our voices that has come
back into vogue. But the bigger
thing is that music has become
detached from humanity. Voices
are overtuned. Artists are overpolished. A lot of what you hear is
programmed robotic synthesizers.
The heart has been stripped away.
We want music that makes us feel

something, and nothing is more

compelling than the human voice.
Whats different about this project?
Many things about a cappella
remain constant [for In Transit],
but certain things are amplified for
the Broadway stage. In The SingOff, you want to create drama,
but thats 90 seconds and this is
90 minutes. Each of the characters

EVERY CHARACTER IVE PLAYED IS GOOFY,

BUT IT HAS TO HAVE SOME TYPE OF REALITY.
THE ABSURDITY CAN FLY FROM THAT, BUT IT HAS TO
BE GROUNDED IN SOMETHING REAL.
says Silverman, Fosters collaborator on
Violet and now Sweet Charity. The way
she abandons herself to a projectyou cant
quite believe what youre seeing, which is why
you cant take your eyes off of her. Theres so
much integrity and direct honesty in her performances. It feels fresh and new every time.
Thats why shes, in a way, irresistible.
And she could frankly coast at this point,
Silverman adds. She has plenty of things she
could be doing, and instead shes looking at the
next challenge.
Foster also boasts the kind of backstory
working actorsand especially understudies
consider legend. Born in Georgia and raised in
Michigan, she and her older brother, Hunter
Foster, sang in contests and danced in open
calls with their mothers encouragement.
Sometime after booking the role of Sandy in the
national tour of Grease and transferring to
Broadway, Foster appeared in a workshop for a
new musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie, that
changed the course of her life forever.
At that point in my career I was desperate
to just get in rooms and work on new things,
she remembers. Jeanine Tesori, Richard Morris,
and Dick Scanlans endearing adaptation of the
classic Julie Andrews film fit the bill; although
she did not book the leading role, Foster

eventually dropped out of the Les Misrables

tour to join the ensemble and understudy Millie
in 2001. They had offered me ponine on
Broadway and I turned it down to do Millie.
My agents were like, What are you doing?! I
made a lot of head-scratching decisions when I
was starting out.
Then Erin Dilly, the La Jolla Playhouse productions Millie, got sick a week before tech
rehearsals. It was a really weird time and a
lot was a blur, says Foster. I lost 15 pounds
because I was freaking out. It was, as she
points out, the biggest roller coaster any actor
could possibly face. At the end of it, though, she
was headlining on Broadway and accepting her
first of two Tony Awards for leading actress in
a musical.
I just really loved the show and really
believed in the people involved, she says of
her decision to join Millie. Fosters sunny
dispositionand youthful naivet, shes quick
to addguided her in the right direction. I was

Im on a show called Younger, because I still
think...in every aspect of my life, Im five or 10

Valentine do not at first seem a
match made in casting heaven.
The Sweet Charity character
seems too manic, too desperate for
attention to be played by such an
effortlessly charming, Tony-winning actor. But
then again, plenty of roles dont seem to suit
Fosteruntil shes on the New York stage nailing them.
Its interesting to play Charity now, when
Im 41, says the actor, on break from a daylong dance rehearsal where shes just jumped,
twirled, and high-kicked on repeat while barely
breaking a sweat. Shes still holding onto
this optimistic outlook and hasnt learned.
Charity keeps making the same mistakes, and
shes been this way for 40 years.... Shes the
tragic clown.
An Off-Broadway revival of Cy Coleman,
Dorothy Fields, and Neil Simons musical ode to
hapless lovers began performances Nov. 2 at the
New Group. Starring Foster and led by director
Leigh Silverman and choreographer Joshua
Bergasse, the production includes homages
to original 1966 helmer Bob Fosse alongside a
substantialeven starkly dramaticrethinking
of the shows themes. Charity the romantic
taxi dancer is a character made iconic by Gwen
Verdon on the Great White Way and Shirley
MacLaine on the big screen, a character that
has delighted countless audiences in the last
half century. But as Foster so brilliantly puts it,
This shits dark.
Charity, she explains, uses her sense of
humor to deflect, to hide. Its her way of dealing. Charity goes, Wakka wakka wakka here
Foster splays her hands and wiggles her arms
aboutto say, Let me distract with a joke or
sex or something, anything, so that you dont
have to look at me. But you can see all this:
Arent I charming and arent I cute and hilarious and amazing?
I know what that is...I can relate to that,
confesses Foster. She pauses for a moment and
grins. So! What other deep, dark secrets can I
tell you?
Her reading of Charity as a tragic figure is
the latest example of Fosters greatest asset:
the ability to portray characters in ways that
feel both radical and right. Few other actors
can claim such a varied rsum; in addition
to starring in TV Lands Younger, her
Broadway outings in the last decade include a
cheeky stage diva (The Drowsy Chaperone),
a yodeling frulein (Young Frankenstein),
an ogre princess (Shrek The Musical), the
brazen Reno Sweeney (Anything Goes), and
an introvert both physically and emotionally
scarred (Violet).
She works on such a deep, cellular level,

AGE IS JUST
A NUMBER
How did an actor out in Troy, Michigan, know
to audition for a national tour of Grease? My
mom saw the audition in Backstage, says Foster
with a smile. It was my go-to when I was starting
out, when I was growing up pre-internet.
Foster was able to keep up with industry news by
reading Backstage when it arrived in the mail. That
was our connection to what was going on in New York,
especially with auditions and stuff. She continued to
check Backstage after getting representationgoing
behind her agents backs to audition for the open
call of Les Mis on Broadway. Now its different,
because the internet has brought so much access
to people. I mean, if I had grown up with the
internet and YouTube, oh my God. Who knows?
Being on three seasons of a show called
Younger (and doing relentless press for it)
means Foster has no problem admitting how long
ago this was. Im not a spring chicken, she says
bluntly. But Ive still got spring in my step!

Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life), its Darren

Stars intergenerational comedy that has
turned her into a true crossover artist. As
Liza, a divorce in her 40s masquerading as a
publishing assistant in her 20s, Foster uses her
considerable comic timing to steer the wackiest
of storylines.
Every character Ive played is goofy, but
it has to have some type of reality, she says.
The absurdity can fly from that, but it has to
be grounded in something real. With Liza, I was
like, Why is she doing this? I needed something
I could constantly go back to: Oh, shes doing
it for her daughter. All of her characters, in
fact, are given that same scrutiny. Who is
this woman and what do I have in common
with her? What can I use? I dont want it to
be too far-fetched from what I knowthat
makes it harder.
The puzzle of who a character is and what
her behavior means ultimately unlocks every
aspect of performance, adds Foster. My No. 1
piece of advice, especially for someone whos
an actor-singer-dancera triple threat, theyre
called!people say, Whats the most important? I always say acting. Without knowing
why youre singing or what youre singing
about, its just noise. And without knowing
why youre moving your body, its just flailing of arms.
Fosters other top advice: Ask and ye shall
receive. A key moment in her meteoric journey
with Millie was her response to learning
she hadnt booked the titular role. My agent
said, You didnt get it. And I said, Well, do
they need an understudy? And he checked.
Had Foster not taken her destiny into her own
hands, not fought for a part she adored, where
would she be now?
I dont know! she exclaims. I asked. Isnt
that crazy? I asked. I always trusted my gut and
moved toward the new thing.
And she continues to operate that way.
Especially now, when shes conquered such a
smorgasbord of characters, Foster is still asking
the questions that will push her craft to the
next level: Whats the left turn? Whats the
scary thing? Everything Ive done onstage in
the last five years, Ive looked at it and gone,
eek!she grimaces in mock fearIve come
close to quitting because Im terrified.
Thats when I know, OK, this is the thing Im
supposed to do. Because there will be growth
and there will be challenges and yes, it will be
hard. But in the end it will make me better and
stronger, and thats the goal.
How is it possible for Foster to be better and
stronger than she already is? Just waitno
doubt shell surprise us yet again.

the Oscar-contending Jackie imbued what
couldve been a boilerplate role with believable

Crudups skill at remaining funny, vulnerable,

MICHAEL SHANNON

RACHEL WEISZ

Weve always known Weisz was one hell of an

actorshe has an Oscar, after all!but this year
we were particularly spoiled with a handful of
award-worthy performances from the British
talent. After slowing her output between
20122015, we didnt quite know how much
we missed Weisz until last years Youth;
the months since have seen The Lobster,
Complete Unknown, Denial, and The
Light Between Oceans. Its particularly in that
final supporting turn alongside contemporary
greats Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender
that shes truly astounding as Hannah, whose
husband and infant daughter were lost at sea.
Her precise emotional navigation as first a
woman mourning, then a mother set on bringing her daughter home, ranks among the most
riveting acts this year.BL

MICHELLE WILLIAMS

Some actors faces are designed for the closeup. Williams, with her petite features and
unassuming air, can take you by surprise
within a cameras frame (and on a stageshe
earned a Tony nomination for Blackbird this
year). Look at the way she grimaces in Kelly
Reichardts Certain Women, a cloud of the
quietest rage suddenly visible in her eyes, or
the bravery with which she tackles raw grief
in her powerhouse of a final scene in Kenneth
Lonergans Manchester By the Sea. If shes
shortlisted at this years Oscars, it would mean
a whopping four nominations. Isnt it about
time for a win? JS

MUSICALS
Bandstand

Casting Equity Equity singers and

singer/musicians for Bandstand.
Synopsis: Set in 1945, it tells the story of
a mismatched swing band of military
veterans who join together to compete
in a national radio contest in New York
City with a prize that will guarantee
instant stardom to the winners. But
with complicated relationships, the
demands of the competition and the
challenging after-effects of the War
that each vet band member carries,
going all the way for a win in the contest seems like a dream that may break
them more than give them their big
break. The score is strongly influenced
by authentic 1940s swing music, much
of which is played onstage by the characters who make up the band. The show
races towards a live on air finale that
has an emotionally charged and surprise twist ending that requires every
ounce of talent, stamina and raw nerve
that these musicians possess.
Company: Bandstand NYC LLC. Staff:
Andy Blankenbuehler, dir.-choreo.;
Richard Oberacker, music; Robert
Taylor and Richard Oberacker, booklyrics; Greg Anthony Rassen and Mary-

Mitchell Campbell, music supervisors;

Tara Rubin Casting/Lindsay Levine,
casting; Tom Smedes, Gabrielle Palitz,
Terry Schnuck, Tom Kirdahy, and
Roger Horchow, prods.
Rehearses February 2017; runs
through April 26, 2017 in NYC.
SeekingDonny Novitski Understudy:
male, 20-29, all ethnicities, Polish/
Italian American; he is handsome but
in an unusual, melting pot way; he is a
gifted musician, both as a pianist and
vocalist; he has a confidence in his talent that can sometimes appear arrogant
but he always has the goods to back it
up; he also carries an energy of unrest,
of frustration in knowing how much he
has to offer musically without the recognition and rewards afforded others;
this can sometimes result in speaking
impulsively; however, there must be in
him an inherent likeability that compensates for these flaws; and when he
is at his piano in front of an audience,
he is a true star; also carries the enormous emotional burden of his war
experiences; must also play piano;
strong high baritone with crooner
colors in moments, low Bb (lightly) to
strong high G (with optional high Bb).
Julia Troy Understudy: female, 20-29,
all ethnicities, very intelligent, probably bookish, with a nurturing sensibility; can seem as if she isnt particularly
concerned with being pretty but when
she is in front of an audience, she does
in fact care a great deal; she has put her
life on hold to grieve and to be a companion to her mother; the Julia that has
star quality, that can make herself look
quite attractive, has been in hiding for a
long time; she has incredible vulnerability that she hides very well; but in
those moments she can retain her sly
sense of humor; she can give herself
over to her music in such an organic,
unstudied and we should be reminded
of Judy Garland in Julias mix of vulnerability and strength; she has an
extraordinary singing voice (Warm
alto, low F# to belt D, Legit to G.). Mrs.
June Adams: female, 50-59, all ethnicities, Julias mother; a woman who
likely has let age and disillusionment
get the best of her figure; she has a natural and easy comedic sense about her
but it is tied very closely to the disappointments in her life; a realist by
nature, with an atheistic bent; but she
does try very hard to appear upbeat and
winning when around others who
arent her close family; she is extremely
proud of her daughter and thankful for
her daughters loyalty, but she is also
very intuitive about Julias needs and
can be very pointed and wise when
necessary; low character alto, low Ab to
middle G. Jimmy Campbell: male,
20-29, all ethnicities, very handsome
and can be cautious and very quick to
suspect people of dealing unfairly with
him and those he cares about; but he is
extremely loyal once he comes to trust
someone and feel they trust him; he is
someone that appears to be an underdog in terms of his physicality but can
be the strongest person in the room
emotionally; harbors a secret attraction
to Donny; he has a lawyers mind, analytical and calculating; must also play
the saxaphone; this role is on offer;

seeking Understudy. Davy Zlatic: male,

25-35, all ethnicities, is an archetypical
Falstaff; he is big in body and spirit; he
can be boisterous and at times vulgar in
his humor; he drinks almost constantly
and while his drinking lends a cheerful
veneer to his personality, it covers a
very dark center; he knows that he can
use his humor and good-time bonhomie to keep him from falling into
despair; and given his size and physical
power, it should be apparent that if he
were to become angered, he could do a
lot of harm; must also play bass; this
role is on offer; seeking Understudy.
Nick Radel: male, 25-35, all ethnicities,
is a man who seems constantly irritated
with the world and those that inhabit it;
whether this comes from his physical
attributes or his experiences as a prisoner of war in Germany isnt entirely
clear; fortunately this constant irritation manifests itself in humorous if
blistering verbal outbursts; Nick must
have the sharpest, most cynical sense
of humor and be able to get a laugh by
the slightest impatient roll of the eyes;
and because his talent on the trumpet
is so extraordinary, he can channel that
fierceness and sharpness into his playing; must also play trumpet; this role is
on offer; seeking Understudy. Wayne
Wright: 25-35, all ethnicities, is a
Marine with a capital M; he is disciplined and precise, often impatient and
completely convinced that this is the
result of his training and service. The
opportunities for any number of odd
habits that deal with cleanliness, discipline and order to appear are endless;
he is a man that has an enormous
capacity to bond, to be loyal and to love
but he tries his best to disguise that;
and because those expressions of bonding, care and brotherhood go unspoken, they are not evident in his text and
must be something that we see and
sense in his being; must also play trombone; this role is on offer; seeking
Understudy. Johnny Simpson: male,
25-35, all ethnicities, is a very simple
man; hes not stupid or a comic idiot
foil, but there might have been some
knocks to the head in his accident
which has left him with a rather bad
back; hes an observer, and when
needed a straightforward speaker of
truth; he is very loyal and trustworthy,
if sometimes slower on the uptake than
the others; when playing with the
band, however, this simplicity serves
him and he can be single minded in his
groove and the unshakable foundation
to the swing; must also play drums;
this role is on offer; seeking
Understudy.

seminar with Traci Turton of 90210

minutes in the room with agent.
This means you have more time to
perform another piece if she asks to
see it, or redo the piece with adjustments. you will have more time to
talk with the agent and get to know
one another without feeling like
you are being pushed out the door
before you barely have had a
chance to chat. We are really
excited to add this new and
improved opportunity to our roster
of classes and events. With so few
spots, this will sell out fast, so sign

EVENTS

Seeking participants for, Stage

to Screen, a three-week on-camera class for stage actors that want
to learn more about acting on
camera. Producer states: Many
very talented stage actors have a
hard time turning in an honest
performance on film. This is not
due to a lack of talent, but to a
lack of training in how to transfer
their larger performance style to
the intimacy of the camera. In
this class, actors will learn how to
pare down their broad stage performance to an understated and
honest screen performance.
Actors will also learn on-set terminology, so they know whats
being asked of them if they find
themselves on set. The class is
being taught by a former musical
theatre actor who is now a professional filmmaker and a professional CD. They are uniquely

qualified to help tone down your

performance for a delivery that
suits the camera.
Company: Actors Launchpad.
Staff: Tom Lapke, prod.; Steven

at 115 W 30th St., Ste. 303, NYC.
SeekingActors: 18+, all ethnicities, sides will be assigned to each
actor before the class. Week 1: We
shoot the master. This shot is the
most similar to stage acting
because it often shows the whole
room. Gestures can be larger. Week
2: We shoot the medium. As we
punch in on the actor, their performance should become smaller.
Week 3: We shoot the close-up. This
week, we really drive home the idea
that even a small movement will
look very big on the screen.

Boy, this fall; the play, by Rob Urbinati,

reached his desk by way of Betsy Aidem, the
productions star. Aidem, who had appeared
in Jolson Sings Again and God of Carnage
at George Street, approached him after participating in a workshop of the new play.
Ideally, playwrights become involved in
the development of a new show, and thats
easier to do when the production is less than
an hour from New York. Urbinati has been
present at rehearsals, and the performers are
free to express impulses. Creating a role is
a very different experience, Saint explains.
Actors often have input on the creation of the
play and how it will be published forever.
Saint notes that George Streets role in
presenting new work is important not only
to theater artists, but also to its audiences.
He likens the season selection process to
planning a five-course meal: I like to give
audiences a tasty appetizer, a substantial main
course... I like to vary things. As the theater
continues to keep new plays on the menu,
audiences tend to order them more often.
Over the years, audiences have shifted what
theyve come to like and what they want to see
from us, Saint says. Now, when we do new
plays, they have a much stronger appetite.
