Originally known as the Rozann-Zimmerman
Ballet Center, California Dance Academy
teaches pre-ballet, classical ballet, pointe,
lyrical, contemporary, jazz, tap, and hip-hop.
Its instructors are award-winning performers,
many of whom have had soloist and principal
careers with national ballet companies. Many
of its students have gone on to pursue dance at
the collegiate and professional levels, but the
academys focus is always on the mastery and
joy of dance at each level of achievement.

SPENCER ALEXANDER
BY REBECCA WELCH
isney is going to make
a man out of you. The
much-beloved 90s classic
Mulan is about to undergo
a face-lift for a new live-action
remake. Having found success
rebooting other popular animated
films such as Cinderella and
The Jungle Book, Disney is taking on a whole slew of its classics
and lining them up for live-action
adaptations. Next up to receive
the human touch is the story of a
young Chinese girl who disguises
herself as a man in order to enlist
in the army in lieu of her father.
The film comes hot on the
heels of a similar reboot over at
competing studio Sony. Disneys
version, however, will pull from
its animated fare while Sonys
is inspired by the original, and
somewhat less fleshed-out source
material, The Ballad of Mulan.
No actors are currently attached
to the Disney project but casting is
said to be underway for the newest
incarnation. Debra Zane Casting
is finding the new face of Mulan
and announcements are expected

While its Garfields show, Hacksaw Ridge also offers a slew of fine
supporters, including Sam Worthington, Rachel Griffiths, Hugo Weaving,
and Vince Vaughn in a dramatic turn
as Sgt. Howell. Gibson says that he
rarely holds auditions for his films,
but he didnt hire any duds on
Hacksaw thanks to one-on-one
meetings with prospective parties,
sometimes grabbing coffee with 10
actors vying for the same role.
Generally speaking, Ill just sit
and talk about the weather. You get
an idea of who the person is and
what theyre capable of within 10 or
15 minutes of chitchat, Gibson says.
This come-as-you-are approach
continued while shooting, making
for what Gibson calls a congenial
set, despite the films tight schedule
and grueling subject matter.
I know what its like to be an actor
in films, so I empathize with all their
concerns. I listen to them. I certainly
give them room to do whatever it is
they think needs to be done because
theyve thought about it and theyre
coming from their truth, he says.
All the guys I chose, I hired them
for a reason. I was just glad to be in
a conference of experts and to be
able to bounce my ideas off of theirs
and see what they gave me.... I know
what it is to be in their shoes.

BY SPENCER LIFF
IVE ALWAYS KNOWN I WANTED
to choreograph, from my earliest
memories of being in show biz. I
got my start as a child actor in the
national tour of The Will Rogers Follies, directed and choreographed
by the legendary Tommy Tune. Id
watch him run the rehearsal room
with flair and knew that was meant
for me, a bossy 7-year-old at the
time. Years later, at 23 and with five
Broadway shows under my belt, I
felt the sooner that I started taking
steps to become part of the creative
team, the better.
Heres my advice on how to navigate that process if youve decided
that choreography is your passion
(and let me tell you, it is 100 times
more competitive than being a
dancer).
The first step is to become an

Thats a line
from Wall

as a way of demonstrating his
strength, but every agent who
has seen that film recognizes the
line for what it really is: ignorant.
You see, lunch is an important
part of my day. It serves many
purposes. On the most basic
level, its a 90-minute break that
allows me to fuel my body and
energize my mind. Thats a biological need. Starving yourself
doesnt serve you.
Lunch is also time I can use
to catch up on my reading. And

By Eric Eidelstein
GENEVIEVE
ANGELSON chats
with Backstage about
landing the lead role
of Patti Robinson in
Amazons feminist
period comedy-drama
Good Girls Revolt,
dealing with rejection,
and playing against type.
On her leading turn as Patti.
Its a role I never get to play. I get to play
the one who is wild, messy, and says what
she wants. I was always going in for the
girlfriend or sidekick or the type A. This
time I get to have fun. I was really dying
to do that because thats really who I
amthats Genevieve.
On dealing with rejection.
This is really a profession of recovery.
Thats the secret. For me, I walk into
every situation thinking that its going to
be a rejection. Thats the reality of most
jobs. Its not about the job that you get,
its about how fast you can recover from
the ones you dont. My job is to audition.
Its not to get the part. If I go in, if I do
everything that I can do and my side of the
street is clean, I won.
On leveling artistic egos.
Everyone who is an actor has the same
fear: that there isnt going to be enough
for me. [That] theres not enough room,
theres not enough work. There is no
reason for ego because at the end of the
day, any one of us can be unemployed
tomorrow. Its the great leveler of all of our
artistic egos.

How did an actor out in Troy, Michigan, know
to audition for a national tour of Grease? My
mom saw the audition in Backstage, says Foster
with a smile. It was my go-to when I was starting
out, when I was growing up pre-internet.
Foster was able to keep up with industry news by
reading Backstage when it arrived in the mail. That
was our connection to what was going on in New York,
especially with auditions and stuff. She continued to
check Backstage after getting representationgoing
behind her agents backs to audition for the open
call of Les Mis on Broadway. Now its different,
because the internet has brought so much access
to people. I mean, if I had grown up with the
internet and YouTube, oh my God. Who knows?
Being on three seasons of a show called
Younger (and doing relentless press for it)
means Foster has no problem admitting how long
ago this was. Im not a spring chicken, she says
bluntly. But Ive still got spring in my step!

Characters like Harry Hawkes take delight in
how easy it is to lose control. But for the actors
who play them, its often more of a challenge.
As an unhinged rock n roll producer caught

brilliantly in this psychologically arduous
film. Never veering into absurdity, the twotime Oscar nominee plays to the subtext
beneath Harrys carefree veneer, serving

around brooding characters, only recently

Theres no denying Goodman has the makings
of a great actor, but its rare that he gets the

Thankfully, 10 Cloverfield Lane, from

Playing the modern-day male equivalent

as a sociopathic survivalist who sequesters
himself and his company in his apocalypseproof bunker. But the lines between savior and

Voters for major acting awards may never
