SCIENCE 10 GENETICS UNIT

INTRO TO DNA AND GENETICS

PURPOSE:

to develop a model of DNA

to create an organism with specific

traits from a strand of DNA

to draw a picture of your newly

created organism
create a written report summarizing
the characteristics of your organism

PART 1: DNA ASSEMBLY

1. Colour the nucleotide models, both sides.
Remember that all the phosphates should be the same colour. Same with the rest
of the sections (sugar, adenine, thymine, cytosine, guanine).
2. Cut out the nucleotide models. Cut only on solid lines.
3. Use the key provided and create a sequence of DNA that represents the
physical traits of your desired organism. Tape your DNA sections together to form
a double strand. Make sure you have written down the sequence that you have
chosen.

PART 2: ORGANISM DEVELOPMENT AND PICTURE

1. Once you have your DNA strand assembled, you can then create your new
organism in a poster. Make sure that you indicate the sequence of the DNA on the
poster. Draw your organism, making sure that you have the correct characteristics
based on the DNA in your drawing. Give your organism a name. Add colour. Create
a short write up on your new organism that discusses the characteristics and in
what type of environment the organism will live in. Make it great!
