4 METHOD
4.1 Work Instruction
Mixing, transporting, and spreading of both slurry layers as part of the
Cape Seal.

4.2 Control of the Process

The process will be controlled as per the Project Quality Control Plan, at
the points and frequencies as indicated in the Method Statement.

4.3 Method Statement

a) Scope
This method statement include all the processes required to mix,
transport and spread both slurry layers on the completed tack and
chip layer.
The method statement for applying the tack and chip is covered
under a separate work instruction.
b) Mixing Slurry
Batching of the slurry materials will be based on mass proportions
as per the Engineers design.
The slurry will be mixed by means of truck mixers, loaded strictly as
follows,
o Dry aggregate will be loaded into the dry weigh batching
plant by means of an articulated front-end loader and accurately
weighed to a pre-determined amount. Cement will be added to
the dry aggregate after weighing the aggregate and loaded
simultaneously with the aggregate. The conveyor system on the
batch plant will transport the dry aggregate into the mixer truck
and mixed until a uniform mix of aggregate and filler is obtained.
o Water required will be measured from the bulk supply
storage tank by means of a suitable measuring container and
approximately 80% of the required water will be gravity fed into
the mixer truck and thoroughly mixed with the aggregate and
filler.
o Stable grade emulsion will be measured off from the bulk
supply storage tank by means of a suitable measuring drum and

METHOD STATEMENT
gravitated into the mixer truck and thoroughly mixed with the
other constituents
o The last 20% of the measured off water will then be fed
into the mixer truck and the entire load is then mixed until a
smooth creamy consistency is obtained.

The foreman will check the following,

o That the correct grade of dry aggregate is identified prior
to batching.
o That the water is obtained from approved sources.
o That the moisture content of the dry aggregate has been
checked and that any adjustments required are instructed to the
batching plant operator.

The following quality assurance procedures will be applicable,

Hold point, until the slurry design is approved, each
section to be slurried.
Witness point; that the correct grade of emulsion and
suitably tested and or sampled has been delivered to the bulk
supply tanks at the batching plant, each load of bitumen
received.
Witness point; that the weather conditions are within
the prescribed limits. Each section to be slurried.

c) Transporting and Placing the First layer Slurry

The mixed slurry is transported to site by means of the mixer trucks
and placed on the road in small batches by means of a chute, the
slurry will then be spread by hand as prescribed by the standard
and contract specifications.
The process required spreading the slurry and finishing off the layer
prior to final rolling is adequately described in the specifications.
The tack and chip layer will be rolled by means of an approved flat
wheel roller, rolling will be done early in the morning.

The foreman will check the following,

o That the section to be slurried is properly set out in terms
of widths and lines.
o That the road is sufficiently damp to receive the slurry.
o That the slurry is struck off level with the tops of the
aggregate.

METHOD STATEMENT
The following quality assurance procedures will be applicable,
Hold point, no slurry may be placed until the Engineer
has approved the layer for slurry, each section.

d) Compacting the First Layer Slurry

After the emulsion in the slurry has sufficiently dried off (broken)
then the layer will be compacted by means of a pneumatic tyre-
wheel roller. Rolling will continue until the slurry layer exhibits a
close-knit well-compacted finish.

The foreman will check the following,

o The timing is critical when to start the rolling of the slurry.
o At lest three roller-passes will be required.

The following quality assurance procedures will be applicable,

Witness point, rolling of the slurry is completed, each
section of slurry applied.

e) Transporting and Placing the Second Layer Slurry

Transporting and placing the second slurry will be carried out using
the same processes as for the first layer, except for the following,
o The slurry will be applied in half width construction.
o The mix design will be specific for the second layer slurry

The following quality assurance procedures will be applicable,

Hold point, no slurry will be placed until the Engineer
has approved the layer for slurry, each section to be slurried.

f) Compacting the Second Layer Slurry

The second layer slurry will be compacted in the same
way as the first layer slurry.
The foreman will carry out the same checks as for
compacting the first layer slurry, except for the rolling that will
carry on until the permeability is less than 1 l/hr.

The following quality assurance procedures will be applicable,

Witness point, the slurry layer is sufficiently compacted,
each layer of section of slurry applied
