Mass Analyzer Assignment CHM580
A mass analyzer is a device in the mass spectrometer
which analyze the mass of the ion and seperate them
according to the mass to charge ratios. It was then
transferred to the detector which then detected and
converted to the digital output. One of the types of
mass analyzer is the quadrapole mass analyzer. This
type of mass analyzer consists of four cylindrical rods
which are parallel to each other. It is used to filter the
sample ions according to their mass to charge ratio
(m/z). The seperation is done in the quadrapole based
on the stability of their trajectories in the oscillating
electric fields that applied to the rods. The rods are
connected together at which they consists of four
metal rods that parallel to each other. In between the
rods, there is a radio frequency voltage applied at
which it is the path of the ions to travel along them.
Ions with a certain mass to charge ratio only will reach
the detector for a given ratio of voltages. The other
ions have unstable trajectories and will collide with the
rods.
