QUESTION 2
a)

Show that the axial deformation is given by 6 = (PUAE); where P is the axial force on a
uniform bar of length L and cross-sectional area, A. The modulus of elasticity is .

b)

Figure Q2(b) shows a pallet box hanging to three cables AB, AC and AD on a wall
mounted crane system. The cable wires AB and AD are made of steel while cable AC
is made of copper. Before the 1000 N pallet box is hanged to the hook, cables AB and
AD are each 2000 mm long and cable AC is 1000 mm long. Take Est = 200 GPa, Ecu =
120 GPa, and the diameter of each cables is 4mm. Determine:
0

force in cables AB, AC and AD to support the load, and

(9 marks)

ii)

what will happen to the 6force in each of the cables

if the temperature is increased by
15C. Given ast = 13(10" ) / C, and acu = 17(10"6) / C.

QUESTION 3
a)

b)

Answer the following questions:

i)

Draw the shear-stress distribution diagram for a solid shaft having an allowable
shear stress of 90 MPa.
(2 marks)

ii)

What will be the shear-stress distribution diagram if the solid shaft is replaced
by a hollow shaft?
(2 marks)

iii)

How will the maximum torque change when we replace from solid shaft to
hollow one? Will it become greater, smaller or the same as the maximum torque
of the solid shaft? The outer radius of the hollow shaft is the same as the radius
of the solid shaft. (Note: no calculation is required)
(4 marks)

The shaft AD is made of steel and has a diameter of 120 mm. It is supported by
smooth bearing at D which allows the shaft to rotate freely. Motor A develops 180 kW
of power which is transmitted to the gears such that Gear B receives 75% while the
rest goes to Gear C. If the rotation of the steel shaft is w = 450 rev/min and the
modulus of rigidity for steel is G = 75 GPa, determine:
i)

the absolute maximum shear stress in the shaft, and

(8 marks)

ii)

i)

If the flexural stress at point J is 40 MPa (compression), calculate the internal

bending moment, Mz acting about z-centroidal axis of the beam.
