GROW IN GRACE
(2 Pet. 3:18)
Introduction: A working definition of grace is something given to us that we do not deserve.
What grace a Bible passage is referring to is defined in the context. We need to know the
grace that was, that is, and will be given to us, that we may grow in that grace.
I.

Grow in the Grace that was Given to Us Saving Grace

A. Before the world began. 2Ti 1:9 Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling,
not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was
given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,
1. Free (Gift). Ro 5:15 But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through
the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by
grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.
a. Not by works. Titus 3:15.
b. Not of works. Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that
not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:Eph 2:9 Not of works, lest any
man should boast.
c. No more of works. Ro 11:6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works:
otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no
more grace: otherwise work is no more work.
2. Abundant. Ro 5:20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But
where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:
3. Glorious. Eph 1:6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made
us accepted in the beloved.
4. Rich Eph 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of
sins, according to the riches of his grace;
GRACE

B. Since the church began. Ga 2:9 And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be
pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the
right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the
circumcision.

II. Grow in the Grace that is Given to Us Sustaining Grace

1. Be Reminded. Ro 15:15 Nevertheless, brethren, I have written the more boldly unto you
in some sort, as putting you in mind, because of the grace that is given to me of God,
2. Be Thankful. 1Co 1:4 I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God
which is given you by Jesus Christ;
3. Be Determined. Ac 20:24 But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear
unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have
received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God.
4. Be Worthy. Ac 20:32 And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his
grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them
which are sanctified.
5. Be Sober. Ro 12:3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is
among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think
soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
Gift of Grace1:
a.

Measure. Eph 4:7 But unto every one of us is given grace according to the
measure of the gift of Christ.
b. Proportion. Ro 12:6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is
given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of
faith;
c. Purpose. Eph 3:2 If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God
which is given me to you-ward:
d. Power. Eph 3:7 Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the
grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power.
6. Be Available. Eph 3:8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace
given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ;
7. Be Wise. 1Co 3:10 According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise
masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man
take heed how he buildeth thereupon.

Grow in the Grace that will be Given to Us Splendid Grace

A. The Grace that is to be Given to Israel
1. This grace can be lost. Heb 12:15 Looking diligently lest any man fail of the
grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby
many be defiled;
2. This grace is connected with a kingdom. Heb 12:28 Wherefore we receiving a
kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God
acceptably with reverence and godly fear:
3. This grace has been prophesied in the Old Testament. 1Pe 1:10 Of which
salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of
the grace that should come unto you:
4.

This grace will be given at Christs Second Coming. 1Pe 1:13 Wherefore gird
up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to
be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;

B. The Grace that is to be Given to the Church

1. This grace cannot be lost. Tit 3:7 That being justified by his grace, we should be
made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
2. This grace is connected with the church, the Body of Christ. Eph 3:2 If ye have
heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:
3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore
in few words,
5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now
revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;
3. This grace has never been prophesied in the Old Testament. (See Ephesians 3)
4. This grace will be given in the ages to come. Eph 2:7 That in the ages to come he
might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through
Christ Jesus.

Signs of Growth in Grace

1. Grace Singing. Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom;
teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing
with grace in your hearts to the Lord.
2. Grace Speaking. Col 4:6 Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that
ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. Eph 4:29 Let no corrupt
communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying,
that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
3. Grace Giving. 2Co 8:7 Therefore, as ye abound in every thing, in faith, and utterance,
and knowledge, and in all diligence, and in your love to us, see that ye abound in this
grace also. (see context: 2 Cor 8-9 and Romans 15. Contribution for the poor saints.)
a. The Philosophy of Grace Giving. 2Co 8:9 For ye know the grace of our Lord
Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye
through his poverty might be rich.
b. The Purpose of Grace Giving. 2Co 8:19 And not that only, but who was also
chosen of the churches to travel with us with this grace, which is administered by
us to the glory of the same Lord, and declaration of your ready mind:
c. The Promise of Grace Giving. 2Co 9:8 And God is able to make all grace
abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may
abound to every good work:
4. Grace Praying. 2Co 9:14 And by their prayer for you, which long after you for the
exceeding grace of God in you.
5. Grace Living. Ro 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the
law, but under grace. 2Co 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for
my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my
infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Conclusion: You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ He gave us His saving grace, He
gives us His sustaining grace, and He will give us His splendid grace. You had Gods grace, you
have Gods grace, and you will still have Gods grace; all you have to do is to just grow in grace.
As Gods grace is ever abounding, may in that grace of His we keep on growing.
