PROBLEM STATEMENT: 73

Compute the surface deflections of a semi-infinite elastic space under a point load
of 50 kN at radial offsets of 0.10, 0.25, 0.50,0.75, and 1.00 m. Given, E = 135 MPa
and = 0.45.

SOLUTION:
DATA:
Surface deflection = ?
P= 50 Kn
R= 0.1,0.25,0.50,0.75 and 1 (meters)
E= 135 MPa and

= 0.45

Formula used

For r= 0.1

w=

50(1-0.45)
(135000)0.1

= 0.000649

for r = 0.25

w=

50(1-0.45)
(135000)0.25

= 0.00026

for r= 0.50

w=

50(1-0.45)
(135000)0.50

= 0.00013

for r= 0.75

w=

50(1-0.45)
(135000)0.75

= 0.0000865

for r= 1

w=

50(1-0.45)
(135000)1

= 0.0000647

PROBLEM 7.4

Use the approximate Odemark approach to determine the surface deflection under
the centerline of a tire with a 0.15m radius, carrying a load of 40 kN resting on a
0.4m thick asphalt concrete layer placed on top of a subgrade of infinite depth. The
layer moduli are 1300 MPa and 150 MPa, respectively, and is 0.5 for both layers.
SOLUTION:
DATA
Odemark approach
Surface deflection =?
a = 0.15 m
P= 40KN
h= 0.4m
E1 = 1300 MPa
E2 = 150 MPa
= 0.5

Surface Deflection Formula

First we have to find the value of ;

a=

( P/ )

from the above equation = 566kPa

putting the values in the deflection equation w= 2(1-0.52) (566 x 0.15)
150000
We get

w = 0.0085 m
