ASTRINGENT SKIN LOTION

LOTION:
Also called washes
Latin lotio or lavare meaning to
wash
Aqueous or at times alcoholic
preparation containing insoluble
materials in the form of a suspension
or emulsion intended for external
application WITHOUT RUBBING in such
conditions as itching, infection,
allergy, pain, or the like
SKIN:
Largest organ of the body
6% Body weight of an adult
pH 5-6: lactic acid, FA, and amphoteric
amino acids
barrier between external environment
and the body
Astringent skin solution:
Locally applied as protein precipitants
that exhibit low cell penetrability
which makes its action limited to the
surface and interstitial spaces of the
cell
NOTE: reduces pores, reduces sweating
Used to toughen and shrink tissues to
bring about reduction in pore size
Used to cleanse the skin: but causes
dryness of skin so you should use
moisturizer after
Action is often accompanied by
contraction and wrinkling of the tissue
with blanching
May be irritant or caustic and msut be
used in moderate to high
concentration
COMPONENTS:
1. Lactic Acid
2-hydroxypropionic acid
Milk acid; results from
decomposition of lactose in milk
Occurs as colorless or yellowish
syrup liquid

Miscible with water and alcohol


Corrosive upon contact with
skin 10% solution is used as
antiseptic on skin of neonates
Usually: for anti-diaper rash
Use: Treatment for acne; need
to dry to heal it
2. Alum
Occurs as coloerless crystals or
white powder with astringent
tast
Soluble in water (1:7); insoluble
in alcohol
Powerful astringent in acidic
medium
Commonly used because less
expensvie
0.5% to 5% as astringent
Two forms: Al ammonium
sulfate dodecahydrated, Al
potassium sulfate
dodecahydrated
3. Glycerol
1,2,3 propanetril
Trihydric alchohol
Clear. Odorless, syrupy liquid
having a sweet taste but
hygroscopic
4. Others:
Alcholo
Color
Scent
Dissolve FIRST lemon oil
Procedure:
1. Charge 500mL purified water and
alum in compounding tank
2. Heat to 60C and check for complete
dissolution; if notthe lotion will be
turbid.
3. Cool compounding tank to 40C (not
sure kasi natakpan)
4. In a separate container, place alcohol,
lemon oil, lactic acid and glycerin
5. Add alcoholic solutions to
compounding tank IN PORTIONS
6. Stir for 15 minutes.
7. Add enough purified water to
complete to volume
8. Add enough colorant
9. Filter if necessary
