groundattackaircraft,originallybuiltbytheMikoyan
designbureauintheSovietUnionandlaterlicense
producedinIndiabyHindustanAeronauticsastheBahadur
("Valiant").ItisbasedontheMikoyanGurevichMiG23
fighteraircraft,butoptimizedforairtogroundattack.
UnliketheMiG23,theMiG27didnotseewidespreaduse
outsideRussia,asmostcountriesoptedfortheMiG23BN
andSukhoiSu22instead.Itcurrentlyonlyremainsin
servicewiththeIndian,KazakhandSriLankanAirForces
inthegroundattackrole.AllRussianandUkrainianMiG
27shavebeenretired.

Designanddevelopment
TheMiG27sharesthebasicairframeoftheMiG23,butwitharevisednosenicknamed"Utkonos"
("Platypus")inRussianservice,firstintroducedontheMiG23B.DissatisfactionwiththeMiG23BNledtothe
furtherdevelopmentofthebasicairframetoaccommodateastrongerundercarriage,simplerintakesanda
shorterexhaustnozzle,[2]withoutradarinfavorofadownwardslopingprofileforimprovedpilotvisibility,[3]a
laserrangefinderandmarkedtargetseeker.[4]Amongitstestpilots,itwasalsocalled"Balkon"("Balcony")
becauseoftheincreasedfrontalviewfromthecockpit.Additionalcockpitarmorwasinstalled,alongwitha
totallynewnav/attacksystem.
SincetheMiG27wasintendedtoflymostofitsmissionsatlowaltitude,theMiG23'svariableintakeramps
andexhaustnozzleswerediscardedinfavorofasimplerfixedconfiguration,reducingweightandmaintenance
requirements.Theaircraftalsohaslarger,heavydutylandinggeartofacilitateoperationfrompoorerquality
airfields.InaccordancewiththeMiG27sstrikeandlowlevelattackrequirements,provisionsweremadeto
mountmissilesandprecisionguidedmunitions,aswellasretaininganuclearcapabilityinlinewithother
Sovietcombataircraftbyintroducingspecializednavigationsystems.[4]

Operationalhistory
ItwasusedbySovietforcesduringthelaterstagesoftheAfghanistanconflictin
198789.
AlthoughseveralWesternobserversconsideredtheMiG27widelyexported,
confusingitwiththeMiG23BN,theaircrafttypewasonlyexportedtoIndiaand
SriLankawhichalsoutilizedtheMiG27inregionalconflicts.[4]

SriLanka
MiG27aircraftenteredservicewiththeSriLankaAirForcein2000.Duringthe
SriLankanCivilWar,theysawconsiderableactionbombingtargetsandproviding
closeairsupport.InAugust2000,aMiG27crashednearColomboInternational
Airport,killingitsUkrainianpilot.InJuly2001,asecondMiG27wasdestroyed
onthegroundduringanassaultonthesameairforcebasebytheLiberationTigers
ofTamilEelam.AMiG27crashedintotheseaneartheairportinJune2004.
AnotherMiG27fighterjetcrashedonaroutinetrainingmissionon13February
2012neartheDummalasuriyaareaataround1.35pm.Thepilotmanagedtoeject
fromthejetwithoutsustaininginjuries.[5]

On27May1999,duringtheKargilWar,oneIndianMiG27waslost
togetherwithaMiG21whilesupportinganIndiangroundoffensivein
theKashmirregion.[6]
Since2001,theIndianAirForcehaslostmorethan12MiG27sto
crashes.[7]InmidFebruary2010,Indiagroundeditsentirefleetofover
150oftheaircraftafteraMiG27crashedon16February2010in
Siliguri,WestBengal.ThecrashwasattributedtodefectsintheR29
enginesoftheaircraft,suspectedtohaveoccurredduringthe
overhaulingoftheaircraftbyHindustanAeronauticsLimited(HAL).
AnotherMig27crashedintheBarmerareaon27January2015.[8][9]

SriLankaAirForceMikoyan
GurevichMiG27M

On13June2016,aMiG27(TU657)onatrainingmissioncrashedinaresidentialareanearJodhpurAirforce
BaseinRajasthandamagingtwohousesandinjuringthreecivilians[10]whilethepilot(s)ejectedsafely.[11]The
aircraftappearstobeanIndianupgradedvariantofMiG27.[12]

TheMiG27remainsinservicewiththeKazakhAirForce.

Variants
MiG23B
ThefirstFloggerattackvariantwaspoweredbytheAL21F.Only24wereproduced,duealackofengines(the
AL21FwasdestinedfortheSukhoiSu17/22andtheSu24Fencer).ItwasarmedwiththeGSh23Lcannon,
carrying200rounds.
MiG23BN

DerivedfromtheMiG23B,butpoweredbytheR29B300engine.Thisgavetheadvantageofmakingthis
variantexportable(theAL21Fwasarestrictedengineatthetime,unliketheR29B300).TheR29B300also
offeredcommonalitywiththeMiG23MSandMiG23MFfightervariantsalreadysoldtotherestofworld.It
wasarmedwiththeGSh23Lcannon,with200rounds.
MiG27(MiG23BM)
ThiswasthefirstintheMiG27familytohaveacanopywithoutthecentralframe,suggestingthattheejection
seatwasdesignedtodirectlybreakthroughthetransparency.ThedielectricheadabovethepylonontheMiG
23wasusedontheMiG27tohouseelectroopticalandradiofrequencygearinstead.Itwasalsothefirst
variantarmedwithaGryazevShipunovGSh630MGatlinggun.ItsNATOreportingnamewasFloggerD.

NATOreportingname:FloggerJ2.TheMiG27Kwasmostadvanced
Sovietvariant,withalaserdesignatorandcompatibilitywithTVguided
electroopticalweapons.ItcarriedtheGSh630cannon.Around200
werebuilt.
MiG27M
NATOreportingname:FloggerJ.Thismodelwasacheapervariant
thantheMiG27K,butmuchbetterthantheMiG23B,MiG23BN,and
MiG27(MiG23BM),withtheelectroopticalandradiofrequency
MiG27K
headsabovetheglovepylonsdeleted.ItwasfirstarmedwiththeGSh
623MGatlinggun,butthiswaslaterreplacedbyanew30mmGSh6
30sixbarrelcannonwith260roundsofammunitioninafuselagegondola.Italsoreceivedmuchimproved
electroniccountermeasure(ECM)systems,andanewPrNK23Knav/attacksystemprovidingautomaticflight
control,gunfiring,andweaponsrelease.However,thismodificationwasnotverysuccessfulbecauseofthe
heavyrecoilfromthenewcannon,andburstslongerthantwoorthreesecondsoftenledtopermanentdamage
totheairframe.TestpilotV.N.KondaurovdescribedthefirstfiringoftheGSh630:"AsIimposedthe
centralmarkontheairtargetandpressedthetriggertoshoot,IheardsuchnoisethatIinvoluntarilydrewmy
handaside.Thewholeplanebegantovibratefromtheshootingandhadalmoststoppedfromthestrongrecoil
ofthegun.Thepilotlesstarget,whichwasjustmakingaturnaheadofme,wasliterallydisintegratinginto
pieces.Ihavehardlycometomysensesfromunexpectednessandadmiration:Thisisacalibre!Suchabeast!If
youhitsomethingitwillbeplentyenough[towipeitout]".Atotalof200MiG27Mswerebuiltfrom1978
to1983,plus160forIndia,anditiscurrentlyinservicewiththeSriLankaAirForce.

AllMiG27DareMiG27s(MiG23BMs)upgradedtoMiG27M
standard.ItisverydifficulttodistinguishfromtheMiG27M.305were
upgraded.
MiG27ML
ThiswasanexportvariantoftheMiG27Mprovidedin1986toIndiain
knockdownkitsforlicenseassembly.ItwasthesameastheMiG27M,
excepttheundernosefairingfortheinfraredsearchandtrack(IRST)
sensorhadasinglewindowinsteadofseveral,liketheoneonthe
originalMiG27M.Atotalof150wereassembledbyIndia.Indiarefers
tothismodelastheMiG27MBahadur,whileMiG27ListheMikoyan
exportdesignation.[2]

Thiswasa1988indigenousIndianupgradeofitslicenseassembledMiG27LwithFrenchavionics,which
providesthesamelevelofperformance,butwithmuchreducedsizeandweight.Thecapabilitiesoftheaircraft
arebeingenhancedbytheincorporationofmodernavionicssystemsconsistingprimarilyoftwoMulti
FunctionDisplays(MFDs)MissionandDisplayProcessor(MDP),SextantRingLaserGyros(RLGINSI),
combinedGPS/GLONASSnavigation,HUDwithUFCP,DigitalMapGenerator(DMG),jamresistantSecured
Communication,standbyUHFcommunication,datalinkandacomprehensiveElectronicWarfare(EW)Suite.
Amissionplanningandretrievalfacility,VTRandHUDCamerawillalsobefitted.Theaircraftretainsstand
by(conventional)instrumentation,includingartificialhorizon,altimeterandairspeedindicator,tocaterforthe
failureofHUDandtheMFDs.TheMiG27sarealsobeingequippedwiththeFrenchAgaveorRussianKomar
radar.TheinstallationoftheradarwouldgivetheMiG27antishipandsomeairtoaircapability.Itisexpected
thatatleast140ofthe180aircraftwillbeconvertedfromMiG27MLs.
