Answer ALL Questions
1.Pick a plastic component from any of these categories - industrial areas; medical,
consumer, automotive, packaging, etc. Get components, not assemblies. You want a
specific part made from one type of plastic material. Take pictures of the components
from a couple of different angles and write a brief description of each.

Identify the type of material used for the component.

Your description of each component is expected to have the answer for the following:
a)
What is it?
b)
What does it do?
c)
How much does it weigh?
d)
Is it disposable?
e)
Is it a component of an assembly?
f)
Was it decorated in any way?
g)
Is it colored?
h) Is it made for indoor or outdoor use or both?
i) How long do you think it is supposed to last?
j)Write product specifications for each of the components that you have
gathered.
k)Why was plastic used to make the product? Look at the specific properties
required:
Chemical resistance, ultraviolet light resistance, lightweight, cheap, fatigue
resistance, barrier properties (packaging), dimensional stability, colorability, clarity,
scratch resistance, etc.
l)What is the temperature range that the product will need to withstand?
m)This is a product specification and should be written in terms of the
component, not the material that was used to create it. (5 marks)
2.Analyze the following terms with two examples in each category:
a)
Polymer alloy.
b)
Polymer Blend.
c)
Polymer Nano Composites. (5 marks)
3.Explain the latest research on surface chemistry by adsorption, preferential sorption
and give a report on suitable adsorbent used and mechanism with focus on the following
processes in the specified industries
a)
Sugar Industries De- colourisation
b)
Water treatment Ion exchange
c)
Leather / Dye Industries Dye removal
d)Pharmaceutical Industries Drug delivery (10 marks)
Academic Integrity & Plagiarism Policy: The student should be ready to prove the authenticity
of the work done. If any forms of plagiarism/reproduction of answers are discovered, the
following disciplinary actions will be taken:
First Offence: Written warning and zero mark in that
particular course.
Second Offence: Withheld in that particular course.

Third Offence: Withheld from all courses of that

particular semester.
Fourth Offence: Suspension from the college for the time period
decided by the committee.
Late Submission and Penalty: Late submission of assignments will result in deduction of 20%
of the allocated marks per day beyond the assignment deadline.
