This specification, together with data sheets, Purchasers Requisition, Purchase Order/Inquiry, vessel
Engineering Drawings sets forth the requirements for the design, fabrication, inspection, testing and
supply of trays.
This specification shall apply to conventional type trays such as valve trays, bubble cap trays, sieve
trays and chimney trays.
1.2

Priority for the Requirements


As a rule, priority order for the design, fabrication, inspection, testing and supply of trays is as follows ;

However where there are conflicts between these drawings and documents, such conflicts shall
be promptly referred to Purchaser for solution.

1.3

Vendors Guarantee and Responsibility

1.3.1

Vendor shall guarantee the tray hydraulics, such as flooding approach, weep point, operating range,
pressure drop specified on requisition and/or data sheets and downcomer back up based on the
system factor specified on requisition and/or data sheets. If system factor is not specified by
Purchaser, Vendor shall select the suitable figure in consideration of the data available. In the event
that certain requirements can not be practical or desirable for the design of trays, it shall be the
responsibility of Vendor to point out. In such case, alternate design shall be proposed by Vendor for
Purchasers approval.

1.3.2

Vendor shall be responsible for the mechanical design of the trays including support beams and
support structures.

1.3.3

Tray support ring, downcomer clamping bar and all other welded-parts to vessel required for tray
installation shall be designed by Vendor. Detail drawings for such hardware shall be furnished to
Purchaser for approval.

1.5.1

Vendor shall submit to Purchaser drawings and documents as called in Purchasers Requisition.

1.5.2

All drawings and documents shall give the name of the client, Purchasers Work No., Item No., and
name of the commodity.

1.5.3

Drawings and documents to be submitted shall be in measurement system specified in Purchasers


requisition. As a rule, drawing shall be prepared to scale and in third angle projection.

Tray assembly drawings and tower attachment drawings shall contain at least ;

Purchasers approval for drawings and documents shall not relieve Vendor of his responsibility to
meet all requirements of the purchase order.

PERFORMANCE DESIGN

2.1
2.1.1

Hydraulics
Vendor shall check the hydraulics by using tray loading data specified on data sheets in Purchasers
Requisition. In the case that tray geometry is also specified on data sheets, Vendor shall rate the
hydraulics based on such geometry. In the event that Vendor can not guarantee a certain hydraulic
point, it shall be pointed out and the suggested design shall be submitted.

In case that no tray geometry is specified on data sheets, Vendor shall decide each dimension such
that Vendor can guarantee the hydraulics.
Tray Geometry

2.2.1

In case of Vendors design, flow path length shall not less than 450mm unless otherwise specified on
data sheets.

2.2.2

In case of Vendors design, the under downcomer clearance and the outlet weir height shall be
determined in consideration of the static seal. The design with no static seal is not acceptable unless
otherwise specified on data sheets.

2.2.3

The quantity of perforations in sieve trays shall be tolerated within +/- 2% of that specified on data
sheets or hydraulic calculation sheets.

3.

MECHANICAL DESIGN

3.1

Material

3.1.1

All material shall conform to those specified on Purchasers data sheets and/or vessel Engineering
Drawings.

3.1.2

Minimum thickness(including the corrosion allowance) and the corrosion allowance for trays and

; i.e. Catalyst bed support beams and distributor / quench trays support beams of reactor
; a) No CA is considered for internal parts made from V-profile wire screen, wire mesh or knitted
mesh.
b) The CA will be confirmed item by item. If expected corrosion rate is greater than or equal to
0.2 mpy, 1/2 of total CA applied to vessel shell shall be considered on each exposed surface.

3.1.3

In the event that the tray panel thickness is changed from that specified on data sheets, the effect on
pressure drop shall be furnished to Purchaser for approval.

3.1.4

Tray fastener material such as bolts, nuts, washers and clamps shall be 11-13% Cr for carbon steel
trays and similar material to the tray panel material when alloy steel is specified. Minimum size of the
bolting shall be M10.

3.2
3.2.1

Design Loading and Allowable Stress


Tray shall be designed with the combined load of dead weight and the uniform static load under
operating condition. The uniform load shall be considered to act either upward or downward at design
temperature.
Separately, tray shall be designed in consideration of the concentrated load of 1177N (120kgf) in
addition to dead weight at any point on the tray. Such load shall be considered to act downward.

Deflection

3.3.1

Deflection under both operation and maintenance shall be designed so as not to exceed the
followings ;
Beam for both independent type and integral type: 1/1000 times vessel inner diameter
maximum.

3.3.2

Initial camber upward shall be less than 1/800 times vessel inner diameter.

Support Beam
Independent Beam
(1) The top of the support beam shall not be protruded from the level of tray panel.
(2) The beam shall be designed to attach to shell with bolts and nuts with slot holes such that it can
not be lifted or rotated and it can not be restricted from thermal expansion.
(3) The beam perpendicular to liquid flow path shall be designed so as to have its depth as 25% of
the tray spacing and less.
(4) The beam parallel to liquid flow path shall be designed so as to have its depth as 30% of tray
spacing and less.

3.4.2

Integral Beam
(1) Beam shall be designed to be turned down from the tray panel.
(2) The maximum depth of the beam shall be 25% of the tray spacing.

3.5

Tray Junctions

3.5.1

All tray junctions shall be stiffened either by integral beam or independent beam.

3.5.2

The maximum width of the tray junctions in active area shall be designed such that support members
do not exceed 100mm in width.

3.6

The minimum support ring width and overlapped dimension between trays and the support ring shall

3.6.2

The minimum support ring thickness shall be determined by Vendor. Two (2) times of corrosion
allowance for pressure vessel shell plus 6mm shall be kept in case of carbon steel support ring.

3.7

Others

3.7.1

All trays shall be of removable plate type so as to be passed through nearest manhole of vessel
unless otherwise specified on data sheets.

3.7.2

All tray parts except for the manway, shall be designed to be installed from top side of the tray panel.

3.7.3

Manway
(1) Each tray pass shall be provided with the manway which should form a component of the active
area.
(2) The tray manway shall be in vertical alignment as far as possible.

(3) The manway shall be designed to assemble and disassemble from either side of the tray by
single workman.
(4) Minimum size of the manway shall be 380mm x 450mm.
3.7.4

Fasteners / Miscellaneous
(1) At the bottom of downcomer, spacers shall be provided with spacing 600mm in center to center
of spacers in order to avoid the distortion of the downcomer.
(2) Tray deck shall be fastened to support ring by clamping or equivalent devices with maximum
spacing of 150mm.
(3) Seal plate shall be provided with all gap to avoid leakage.

3.7.5

Drainage
(1) Drain hole is required at the bottom of the inlet weir. 6mm half radius hole shall be provided
each 2500mm length of the inlet weir.
(2) At least one(1) drain hole of 6mm is required for the recessed seal pan unless otherwise
specified on data sheets.

(3) One(1) drain hole of 6mm shall be provided in sump for every 0.9m sump area, unless
otherwise specified on data sheets.
(4) In the design of the bubble cap trays, active area shall be provided with one(1) -10mm diameter

weep hole for every 2.3 m unless otherwise specified on data sheets.
3.7.6

Seal weld is required when liquid seal is specified for trays. Manway shall be provided with gaskets.

3.7.7

Vessel Tolerance
Vessel tolerance is assumed as stipulated in Fig.B item 13a through 18 of Engineering Specification
D-102 Pressure Vessels. Vendor shall confirm that tray supplied can be operated without the
deterioration of the performance under the severest condition. In the event that Vendor can not
accept the tolerance, the required tolerance shall be referred to Purchaser to incorporate into the
design of vessel suppliers.

4.

INSPECTION AND TESTS

4.1 General
Inspection and test of trays shall be done in accordance with inspection and test procedure furnished by
Vendor, which shall be approved by Purchaser. Such procedure shall be included the following
requirements described below.
4.2

Trial Assembly
One(1) tray for each size and geometry shall be assembled and checked dimension and flatness at
Vendors shop. Dummy manhole is required to check if all parts can be passed through.

4.3
4.3.1

Leakage Tests
Leakage test shall be carried out with water after assembling of the trays at site when liquid tight
sealing is specified in data sheet and/or data sheets.

Bubble cap tray shall be leak-tested under the condition of the proper level and plugging weep holes
at site. Holding time and acceptance leakage rate shall be referred to data sheets.

PACKING AND SHIPPING

5.1

All tray parts made of carbon steel shall be coated with a removable rust preventative grease. Trays
made of corrosion resistance alloy steel shall be cleaned and be free from grease.

5.2

Each tray parts shall be marked with corresponding marking shown on the assembly drawings.

5.3

All fasteners shall be hard-stamped such that the material can be distinguished easily.

5.4

All tray parts shall be packed so as to be protected against damage during transportation.

5.5

Spare parts shall be supplied in accordance with Purchasers requisition. Spare parts shall be packed
separately from proper tray parts in same wooden box.

5.6

Trays and internal parts for different towers shall not be intermixed.
