Classroom
Table 1: Documenting Environmental Print
Examples of Environmental
Print

Purpose
Student recognizes
and identifies
different shapes
with different colors.
The picture helps
student to know the
concept of each
shape and try to
read names of them.
They use simple
language (one word)
so that help them to
develop their
linguistic skills by
trying to blend each
sound to create the
word.
Five senses
describe each sense
by a picture for each
of them and write
the name and give
example. Such as in
smelling sense part
they have the
picture that present
smell sense (food,
flower garbage and
perfume). It includes
two languages
Arabic and English.
Arabic alphabet, card
for each letter with
picture that presents
it. For example ( A) for
( lion) and put
picture for it. That will

Ideas for further

development
Write the name of the
shapes in English
because they are in kg2
so they start to learn
the English language.
The teacher can put the
picture of real items
that present different
shapes with writing the
name of them for
example circle for ball
and clock teacher can
write the name of circle
and example of it (ball
and clock) so the learn
different words that
relate with shapes.
It is better if they use
the body part of boy or
girl then they can make
a mind map to make it
easily and more
understand. Use both

languages for Smelling sense
Flower explaining.

The Arabic language is

first of mum language so
it easy for them to give
examples. If we create
two section two tables for
Arabic and English so they

help student to read

the letter and give
example for another
word in same letter
like for and
(rabbit). Whoever they
can understand how to
write the letter and
identify and recognize
with other letters.

compare between two

languages. In addition,
English is the second
language so they should
put it in the classroom
they can use it in the
reading area that helps
them to read the letter
and sound in corner time.

Reflections on Observation Task 1:

Environmental in the Classroom
Read the questions below and choose (1) one to respond to
1. How does environmental print impact students language
development, and their reading and writing abilities?
2. How do students of different reading levels use environmental
print?

There are different type or design of print that helps

student in different level for example: at low level they
can see the photo to know what they write so the picture
help gives them meaning of sentence or word, while the
middle level the can read one word or two with picture to
understand and high level they can understand the mind
map with photo and words (short sentence). In addition
print environment help the student to develop their
reading and linguistic and be able to write.

3. How does awareness of environmental print impact how students

view themselves as readers?
How does a school-home connection (based on environmental print) impact
