BIOPOL

Biopol also known as Polyhydroxybutyrate, which is abbreviated to

PHB, is a polymer that is biodegradable and causes less damage to
the environment than using petrochemicals. It is obtained by
fermenting plant sugars and glucose. It is a biopolymer as well as a
polyester while having similar properties to polypropene. It is
compostable, allowing for degrading within a month, which does not
negatively affect the soil. Researchers are developing a method to
make PHB directly from the plants with is an easier and simpler way
to obtain it.

PROPERTIES AND USES

Bipol is soluble in water, has a resistance to UV rays, alkalines and
acids as well as high tensile strenght. It opens gateways to a variety
of uses such use in the medical field, as it is biocompatable and also
the use in industry. With this, Biopol has a huge potential for medical
use, but also the industrial uses. The disadvantages include that
PHB is expensive relative to the normal polymers currently used.

HOW ITS MADE AND HOW ITS DISPOSED

Renewable natural products such as cornstarch make PHB. When
the corn grows it takes in CO2 in the air and since the amount of
CO2 emitted would be the similar to the intake of CO2, it would a
more environmentally friendly process.
