Welcome to Granville Towers! That time youve been anxiously waiting for is finally here! Whether or not youre
excited about starting classes, its probably safe to say that youve been looking forward to coming back to Chapel
Hill or coming here for the first time.
If youre here for the first time, get ready for
what promises to be an amazing experience
where you are going to meet so many different
types of people and make memories that are
sure to last a lifetime. Your time here is going to
fly by, so cherish every minute of it.
You chose to live at Granville for a reason
whether it be having The Agora within minutes
of your room, being within reasonable walking
distance to your classes and Franklin Street or
having the opportunity to park; you made the
right choice.
One of the greatest perks to living in
Granville is The Agora, located in West Tower.
The Agora, commonly known as the Ag, is
Granvilles all-inclusive dining hall. Each visit to
the Ag is one meal on your Granville card, so
make use of your meals if you have a smaller
meal plan! Many residents choose the larger
meal plans because they find themselves going

to the Ag just to grab coffee and a bagel on the
way to class or ice cream in the middle of the
day, so make sure your meal plan fits your
eating habits! And of course, if you want to
upgrade or minimize your meal plan, you are
able to do so. Just contact the business office.

 COLLEGE
Need to study in a quiet area or just want something different
from the library? Then be sure to get acquainted with the 24-hour
study lounge located in the basement of South Tower. There are
wireless and ethernet connections available.
East Basement is definitely the place to go when you are in
need of a study break. Here you will find the AV room and an Xbox
360 game room. The keys for these rooms are available at East
Desk and you must have your Granville card to check out games
and other necessary equipment.
Each basement also has a 24-hour laundry facility, mailbox
wall and vending machines. You can either use quarters for
laundry, or put money on your Granville card. You should have
received your Granville card on move-in day, however, if you
still need one or have already lost yours and need a
replacement, stop by the business office.
Located in front of West Tower is a swimming pool, which is
exclusively for Granville residents, and a basketball court. The
pool will be open through mid-September and will open again in
mid-April (weather permitting), so make sure to take advantage of
this while you have it! The basketball court is open year round. To
check out a basketball, just go to the West Desk.
Now for the place youll be calling home for the next year
your room! In case you didnt already know, you do have air
conditioning! Thats not a luxury that everyone on campus will
share with you this year. There is a switch in the bathroom to
control the a/c. It will remain air conditioning until the winter
months. At that time, it will switch to heat.
One of the great things about the Granville rooms is that you
are able to move all the ground furniture (except the sink),
so take advantage of this. If youve seen the model rooms,
you know there are many different ways to set up the rooms to
accommodate you and your roommates needs.
Housekeeping will be in your room each week as well. Be
sure to check the schedule posted on your hall so you will be
prepared. They do not pick up your mess on the floor, they just
vacuum around it, so be sure to pick up your clothes!
One of the most important things to do in the first weeks is to
get acquainted with your neighborsyour roommate, suite mates,
hall mates and RA. Youre going to be living with these people for
the next year, so make some new friends! If youre more of a shy
person, dont worry. Your RA will coordinate hall events every
month and Granville has events such as Bingo, Casino Night,
Foam Parties, etc. so that you have the opportunity to meet people
in other towers.
The management at Granville Towers and UNC want you to
feel safe. Granville has someone at the South Desk 24 hours a
day, seven days a week. Security also patrols the property 24
hours a day in addition to University police. Security cameras are
also in place throughout the property. If you ever see anything
suspicious, contact your RA, the Desk Attendant or a member of
Granville management.
We want your experience at Granville to be the best it possibly
can. People are always willing to listen, so if you have questions or
concerns, then dont hesitate to ask a member of the Granville or
University staff!
As I said earlier, your time here will fly by, so enjoy every
minute of it! Now get to studying, because we all need to be

Before the sun sets and the ghosts and
goblins come out to play on Halloween, the UNC
and Chapel Hill communities will come together
for a charity event of epic proportions. Heels 4
Hope, a new charity venture started by the
brothers of Pi Kappa Phi, will be hosting its
inaugural 5k challenge to help raise money and
awareness for three important local charities:
The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer
Center, The Arc of Orange County, and Push
America. Granville Towers and Pi Kappa Phi
fraternity have joined forces in hosting this
amazing event in an attempt to bring the
students of UNC and the Chapel Hill community
together for a great cause.
The race will begin at 10:00 a.m. In front of
the Bell Tower on South Road and will take
participants throughout campus, passing many
of UNCs famous landmarks and then finishing in
the grassy courtyard behind the new Kenan
music building. From there, participants will be
escorted back to Granville Towers for the post-

dress up, you can still take part in all the fun. All
registered participants will receive a free tee shirt
for coming out and supporting the cause.

be a very difficult time for many young men that are eager to be part of the Greek
system, but it is important to be yourself! Joining a fraternity is a big commitment; join
the one that is right for you. Do not accept a bid just because many of your friends are,
but because YOU want to. How well do you know the men in the fraternity you are
considering? Do not be afraid to ask questions. Rush only last a couple weeks, so make
the most of your time - cut to the chase!
While many of you might have an idea which house you would like to join, others

During the process of Rush you will meet many new girls and build
relationships both in the sororities and in your rush groups. There are ten
sororities you will visit during formal recruitment (Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha
Delta Pi, Chi Omega, Delta Delta Delta, Kappa Delta, Kappa Kappa
Gamma, Pi Beta Phi, Phi Mu, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Zeta Tau Alpha) and
you will be introduced to two others, Sigma Rho Lamba and Phi Beta Chi
(Jewish and Christian sororities respectably) who have their own
recruitment processes. Participating within a Sorority can bring about
numerous benefits. Even if you choose not to join a Sorority, the process of
Rush is can be a great opportunity to meet people and experience an
exciting side to UNC.

The Benefits
The benefits to rushing include: meeting new friends, learning about
each House, experiencing sorority-life for a few days, and deciphering
which group of girls you want to become a part of! In the end, the majority
of girls who rushed and chose not to participate in a sorority said they dont
regret going through rush; you will make friends and understand sorority-life
with a whole new perspective.
Sororities can have countless benefits and advantages as well: the
lifelong friendships, the network connections and the always-dynamic
social scene. Whatever the reason for participating, Sorority life will be what
you make it to be. Granville Towers, being located right on Franklin
Street, is a very convenient place to live due to its proximity to the
Sorority Houses.

The Process
A thorough description of the rush process can be found in
the UNC Panhellenic Brochure which can be found on their
website at: http://greeks.unc.edu/. The basic rundown of the
week is broken down into four rounds concluding with a Bid
day (the unveiling of your new sorority). The first day is the
longest; you will visit each sorority with your rush group and get
an opportunity to talk with girls from each house. The next three
rounds will gradually narrow down your Houses. You will get an
opportunity to see skits, tour the houses, and participate in a
philanthropy project while becoming more comfortable talking to
the girls in the Sorority. The final day, Bid Day, is the day where
you officially receive a bid from one of the ten sororities, then go
back to that house for a fun afternoon. [A more thorough description
of the Rush process may be found in the brochure mentioned above.

You just finished your final Friday class. You go
back to your dorm, get a solid power nap, and eat
some dinner with your friends. It is now nine-o-
clock at night, and you are ready to party to
compensate for all the hard work that you devoted
to your classes and activities during the week. First-
year Tar Heels living in Chapel Hill have access to a
wide array of nightlife activities. Every weekend
sometimes starting on Thursday nights as well
students at Carolina can kick back and enjoy being
young adults surrounded by intelligent peers. The
University provides many affordable activities that
students have the opportunity to participate in.
On campus, students can enjoy free movies
provided by the Student Union on weekends. All
that is required of students is a one-card. Movies
are usually pretty up-to-date, and most of them are
comedies that students can go to and laugh with
their friends. Students can also enjoy open mic
comedy nights and ballroom dance lessons. In
addition to entertainment provided by the Student
Union, students can receive discounts for plays and
concerts that take place at Memorial Hall. For
example, students can listen to the student-run a
cappella group The Clef Hangers, see The Nut
Cracker, Sex Talk with Sue Johanson, and much
more for a very minimal cost (about $10.00).
The Cats Cradle, a concert hall located in
downtown Carrboro, also houses many comedic
performances and concerts for usually no more
than twenty dollars per ticket. It is a great place to
go with a bunch of friends, have fun, and enjoy a
good show. But if you want to party and socialize,
look out for fraternity parties. Most of the fraternity
houses are located off of Cameron Street, Columbia
Street, and Franklin Street. If you want to dance and
socialize, frat parties are the place to be on
weekends.
Life
There is one place on Franklin Street that has
(for better or worse) been the venue of preference
for many first years. Players, located at 159 East
Franklin Street just above Suttons Drug Store is
one of the few places that do not require that you
be 21 to enter. While Players has undergone some
changes over this past summer, transforming into
more of a live music venue, instead of just a club.
With that said, they will still continue to operate as a
traditional club a few nights each week.
If a taste of Franklin doesnt tickle your fancy,
there is a ton of nightlife here on campus. Whether
or not you are interested in a fraternity or are a
Greek yourself, you could still have a great time at a
Greek function. There are 11 fraternities within
close walking distance of Granville Towers, so they
shouldnt be too hard to find. While parties are a
fairly common occurrence, the Greek houses also
promote philanthropy events throughout the year.
Stop by for a special dinner; register for a charity
race, or just have some fun!
For at least one night every month, Granville
Towers hosts a special event in honor of its
residents. The first big community event, The
Granville Foam Party was a huge success! But
thats not all. On September 23rd, you and your
friends will have the opportunity to compete for
some awesome prizes at Bingo Night and then on
October 8th you can join other residents to see the
Hypnotist. Take some time to relax or at least
enough for a quick study break and see what all the
talk is about.
In essence, there is plenty of nightlife here at
Carolina. After you are done partying, make sure
that you hit up Franklin Street for some late night
Mexican food at Cosmic Cantina or Qdoba, a super
fast sub at Jimmy Johns, or a hot and tasty wrap
from [B]skis. No good night ends on an empty
stomach!
