Uganda
Life in
Story and Photos By Maressa McCall
What do you think of when you hear Fourth of July celebration? Id bet
your first thought isn't bubbles, Walker Texas Ranger, popcorn, sodas and ninety
Ugandan orphans, but now mine is. For me, this summer was so many things at
once: incredible, fun, hot, unusual, amazing, but most of all life-changing and
unforgettable. I've never met more people in one place that have made such an
impact on my life in such a huge way. That is how I spent my 4th of July. While it
definitely made me appreciate American freedom, a good cookout and fireworks,
I've got to say spending my 4th of July like that gave me so much more than a
good nighttime show.
Prior to this summer I would never have called myself much of a kid-person,
but in fact Im just the opposite now. Not only have I spent the entire summer
working at an orphanage, teaching both primary and secondary school children,
but I also lived with a Ugandan family with two young children, ages three years
and eleven months. Life in Busia, Uganda takes some getting used to: a hole is
the toilet, bucket bathing instead of showers, hand washing clothes and walking is
the standard mode of transportation. My immersion in rural Ugandan life with a
family with children was an experience in and of itself. To make the situation even
more interesting, the three-year-old was just getting comfortable in learning to
speak... Luganda that is, not English. So communication with her was a bit
difficult. On the positive side, it did cause my Luganda language learning curve to
increase quite rapidly!
It's a good thing everyone else speaks English in Busia because I have by no
means mastered the Lugandan language. Of course, I learned all of the most
important phrases such as Njagala chai or "I want tea." This is definitely a good
phrase to know. I think I drank enough tea this summer to fill a swimming pool,
certainly more tea than I have ever before consumed in my entire life. Tea is
important here well beyond its nutritional or hydration value; teatime is a social
pastime. Anytime you visit someone or they visit you, tea is not only offered but is
expected to be there. Teatime, or socializing time, highlights a most fundamental
difference in American life versus Ugandan life -- relationships. The value of
relationships between Ugandan people (friends, family, lovers) is almost beyond
descriptive capture.
The whole structure of Ugandan society is different in the way it views and
values people. The sense of community is paramount in Uganda; whereas, the
sense of self is very high in America. Each society has its positives and negatives,
but the community in Uganda is brimming with joy and happiness despite the
hardships an African child must overcome to simply survive. The kids at the New
Hope Orphanage, in Busia, are as close to literally having nothing as anyone
should ever be, yet they are the most joyful group of individuals I have ever met.
They take joy in each other, joy in the Lord, and joy in everything they have the
opportunity to do, and I admire them for that. Actually, I wouldn't stop at the word
[12] respect, and love them for that.

have little family, few clothes, share a bed with another orphan and eat the
same thing for almost every meal, they know how to love and be truly
happy. Like a fountain, their love flows outward spilling over all things in
their daily life. Only through their love have I learned how to really love
another person unconditionally.
Don't misunderstand me and think that everything is perfect and
always wonderful in Uganda, because that would be one of the biggest
mistakes you could make. Uganda has many problems; not all kids are
lucky enough to live in a place as nurturing and loving as New Hope, or
to have a family to take care of them. In addition, there are many social
and cultural norms that frustrate westerners. Everyday when I left my
house I heard, mzungu mzungu! Throughout the day, anywhere and
everywhere I went(mzungu: white person or foreigner in East Africa).
The word mzungu might as well replace any foreigner's name when
they visit because from the moment they set foot in the country, that is
how they will be known. On top of that, we are quoted what is labeled by
the volunteers as the "mzungu price."
The greatest misconception Africans have about the rest of the world
is that all foreigners have lots of money. Maybe it's because many

Even though it's not perfect some things must be working alright in
the school system because some very well-educated, intelligent people
do come out of the system, but the success rate of this caliber of student
could definitely be higher if different teaching styles were employed.
Many Ugandan kids probably never question the educational process for
one of two reasons: (1) they know of nothing different, or (2) they fear
discipline with the cane. American teachers would get fired and sued in
a heartbeat if they hit a child with a cane; but in Uganda use of the cane
is the preferred and government sanctioned method of punishment for
infractions at school.
At times, teaching was a struggle because some children lacked a
solid foundation and others could not comprehend much English, but it
was all definitely worth it. To see a change in just one student makes
all the inconveniences seem small in comparison. But I am lucky, I
had many students throughout my stay who came up to me and told
me how much better they understood math now or, even more
importantly, how they even enjoyed math now because of the
opportunity to embrace different teaching approaches over the two
month period. Once I even had a student who passed me a note
that said, "I am practicing to draw angles in my free time." Just one
