The symbols for the elements can be found in the Period Table

ELEMENTS are made up of only one type of

atom. There are only about 100 elements.

They have different

properties

Metals
-shiny can be
polished
-solids
- high density
-high melting and
boiling points
-good ability to
conduct electricity
and heat

Non-metals
-usually dull
-mostly liquid or gas,
some are solids
-brittle for solids
-low density
-low melting and
boiling points
-poor ability to
conduct electricity
and heat

Periodic Table of the Elements

Examples
of
elements:
Oxygen,
Copper,
Gold,
Nitrogen,
Titanium

Elements

Hydrogen
Alkali metals
Alkali earth metals
Transition metals

Poor metals
Non-metals
Noble gases
Rare earth metals

The elements are arranged in vertical columns, called

GROUPS. Each group contains elements with similar
chemical properties
Mass number = number of protons +
neutrons

An element is a chemical substance

that cannot be broken-down into
any simpler substances by chemical
reactions.

Atomic number = number of protons
