PROJECT 01

PROJECT 1 -

THE

THINGS

WE

FORGET

An exhibition project based on the idea of showcasing a series of hand-written

notes by J.J Penn, whom deliberately leaves behind hand-written notes in different places to enlighten someones day. This project is held in a construction site
soon to be transformed into a hostel.

PROJECT 1

THE THINGS WE FORGET

THINGS WE FORGET by J.J Penn

This inspiring collection of hand-drawn notes began with a simple premise: its worth remembering whats most important in life, even when you cant see the bigger picture. From his very first note, written hastily in the backseat of a taxi for the
benefit of the next passenger (it said, Never give up), J.J Penn has inspired both passersby and devoted fans with his uplifting and quirky reminders. Everyday since then, Penns simple notes, created nothing more than a pen and sticky pad, have
been photographed and then left in public anonymously in hopes to spread a little goodwill and brighten someones day.

SITE
Site is located near to Singapores art belt, Bugis, hence making it Hand-written notes are then made to be classified into the different abstract nouns
an ideal site, relating to content. The building is currently under con- that are found on site to relate back to context. Each abstract noun hence represtruction to be built into a hostel. The site originally has different sents a different collection in the exhibition.

PROJECT 1

06
DESIGN PROCESS (TO CONTEXT)

CONCEPT
In relating the collection to the context of the building, the idea of a vertical maze is implemented
due to the fact that the collection exudes an element of lost & found, hence the intention is to allow users to get lost in the space through the concept of a vertical maze throughout the building.

THE IDEA OF A VERTICAL MAZE

CONTEXT
ANALYSIS
Studying the hand-written notes together with
the abstract nouns, some abstract nouns are redundant, hence making use of these redundant
spaces, to create voids, for people to be able to
have a glimpse of what is going on in the building.

SPACES
Highlighted in yellow are used
spaces that are going to be converted into exhibition rooms
as well as hostel functions.

INTENDED
FACADE
Redundant abstract nouns will be
scraped and replaced with fullheight glass panels, whereas some will be open voids.

CIRCULATION
PATH
A free flow circulation path to allow users to be free and get lost
to find post-it notes at random
places to keep the element of surprise just like the idea of J.J Penns
post-it notes being placed and
found at random places.

PROJECT 1

08
INTENDED DESIGN TO CONTENT
A permanent exhibition in collaboration with a hostel, the exhibition showcases collections of hand-written notes randomly showcased in different areas of the building, some at random and some categorized in different collections. These notes will
also be showcased in hostel rooms, and in any area of the hostel, making it a playground for users to get lost to find these hand-written notes, playing with the different stages of discovery, from obvious to super-hidden.

PSYCHD

A creative group project touching on the issue of Schizophrenia, it is permanent

installation seeking to create a support system via the general public to push for
free psychedelic treatment for the untreated schizophrenics by allowing the general public to understand the emotional and sensorial turmoil they go through by
recreating a schizophrenic atmosphere in a space.

PROJECT 2 -

12
THE ISSUE
Touching on the topic of Schizophrenia, there are many
Schizophrenics worldwide who are left untreated because
they cannot afford treatment, and this seems to be
an underlying issue only because this mental illness
seems to be outcasted as most do not understand
what victims are going through and the effects of it.
Generally, most people do not understand the mental
illness and outcast these people when in actual fact
it is just like any other illnesses that at best requires
treatment or not resulting in victims drowning in themselves and may suicide as the only possible escape.

PROJECT INTENT
The intent is to recreate a spontaneous worldwide Schizophrenic atmosphere to
induce the emotional turmoil of a Schizophrenic, ultimately playing on feelings
of compassion and urgency of the public to help save these trapped souls,
in hopes to create a support system via the general public to
push for support for Schizo treatment from the Government.

FINAL YEAR PROJECT

THE

TEMPLE

HOTEL

A final project based on the issue of Sex Trafficking, this project handles more
than just on the issue of design, but within it underlies a controversal project
that questions ones mo rality as a designer and taps on the understanding of
the effects of a space influencing ones psychological being. In addition, it is also
an educational commentary to immerse, experience and understand different
types of conditions present in the project for one to be truly mindful of the real
issue at hand.

FINAL YEAR PROJECT

19
A CASE STUDY
AN ARCHITECTURE OF EVIL
German architect albert Speer was Adolf Hitlers chief architect who
had architectural skills, creativity and an ability to carry out orders
with efficiency and speed. He played a major role in th execution of
World War II, in obeying Hitlers instructions to design and construct
structures which includes the Reich Chancellery and the Zeppelinfeld stadium and also had plans to reconstruct Berlin on a grand
scale. He had used his brilliant technical expertise and talents to
enable the war efforts of the most evil regime in history, allowing
it to murder millions of human beings.

A NORM
Albert Speer is just an example of one who had a client with immense
unexpecting needs. This is a fact, that every architect/designer in the
course of its career will face moral decisions that are similiar to or
less weighty than, the ones that Albert Speer faced. In examining
Speers life, the challenge todays designer must confront is to
wear Speers shoes and to ask honestly, What would I have done?

Someone designed the furnaces of the Nazi

death camps. Someone measured the size
and weight of a human corpse to determine
how many could be stacked and efficiently
incinerated within a crematorium. Someone sketched out on a drafting table the
decontamination showers, complete with
the fake hot-water spigots used to lull and
deceive doomed prisoners. Someone very
well educated, designed them.

PROJECT & NOT MEANT TO BE FABRICATED

THE ISSUE

In Cambodia, women and men, children and old people alike are trafficked every day.
Almost all end up in precarious situations, exploited by rich and powerful trafficking lords.
There has been a rise in human trafficking over the recent years in Cambodia, with hundreds of girls being trafficked and sold into brothels where they are forced to work as
sex slaves. With insights of young women straying more often to negative channels due
to lack of awareness of its outcome, this results in an undesirable level of vulnerability
portrayed upon themselves.
This leads to a larger issue at hand how the vulnerability of these women have led to
the abuse of objectification & dehumanisation of women in Cambodia.

FINAL YEAR PROJECT

20
PROJECT INTENT
The project aims to create a commentary on the behind-the-scenes of living conditions of different
groups of people involved in the sex trafficking trade. This includes from the perspective of a new
sex slave - the most inferior, to the perspective of a high-end client - the most superior party in the
spectrum. The juxtaposition also takes into consideration the variance of psychological outcomes
that are present within different groups - this is to create a distinct contradiction, in hopes to raise
awareness of the social issue of the disparities among female sex workers.
This project is staged as a hotel commissioned by the sex trafficking lords for easy business relations between themselves as well as its clients. This of which includes a space for sex traffickers
themselves, clients, as well as women sex workers amidst the everyday operation of a normal hotel.
Also, it includes a secret system specifically for forced sex workers to escape as a tribute left behind
as an act of morality towards this cruel industry.

SITE & SITE ANALYSIS

Sihanoukville is a popular tourist spot in Cambodia, one of the top destinations in which many
Cambodian women move to in hopes to find a means of living amongst the tourism boom, this of
which unfortunately includes Sex Tourism.
The sex tourism industry is part of the fabric, servicing all classes of Cambodian society. Girls are
forced into prostitution because of poverty and corruption that exists across the country. There
have been an increase of Western men traveling to these areas specifically due to the high night
life activity making sex convenient to them.

FINAL YEAR PROJECT

21
ON-SITE OBSERVATION

As a designer on research, I felt that there was a need to travel to Cambodia to visit Sihanoukville itself to understand the culture and to comprehend the site through my own observations.

On site observations are made in Sihanoukville itself.

Sihanoukville is popular for sex tourism, with voluntary sex workers scattered around which makes those who are forced difficult to indentify.

However, only a handful of male tourists were being seen with these sex
workers, mostly due to the fact that most activities are done discreetly.

An ideal place to have proposed hotel located on due to the busy streets.

With night markets located around it making it easy to blend and cover
up any suspicious activities as well it is an inconspicious wasy for forced
workers to escape - through the crowd.

PROGRAM - THE TEMPLE HOTEL

*THIS IS AN EDUCATIONAL COMMENTARY

PROJECT & NOT MEANT TO BE FABRICATED

AN ARCHITECTURE OF PRETENSE
The Temple Hotel, named after temple, is inspired by the purpose
of it being a place of worship and holiness, a characteristic that
represents Cambodia and its culture well. This also gives as a good
reputation towards the hotel - portraying it as a spiritual abode in
actual fact concealed beneath it is the exact opposite.
Concealed beneath everyday operations, lies undisclosed affairs of
exploitations and manipulations, with an entire activity of sex trafficking occuring concurrently - basically for lack of better words, a
living hell. Which makes The Temple Hotel a great disguise to the
actual purpose of it.

As a designer, I was commissioned by

Sex Trafficking lords to design a hotel,
for easy business relations.

PSYCHOLOGICAL OUTCOMES
Taking into consideration the groups of people involved, I want to portray the different perspectives that different groups face, from
the perspective of a new sex slave - the most inferior, to the perspective of a high-end client - the most superior party in the spectrum.
Not forgetting taking into consideration the different psychological outcomes that are present within different groups,
this is to create a contradiction, which may help to raise awareness of the disparities among female sex workers.

VIEW OF ONE OF THE ESCAPE ROUTES

As a designer in a modern day society, one rarely has a choice to avoid

facing clients with malicious intentions, in this case, Sex Trafficking. Most
are obliged to design for clients depite these wants being unfavourable.
However, despite the hotel itself is fulfilling every malicious business needs,
the hotel itself has a secret system designed specifically for sex slaves to
escape as a form of tribute purposedly left behind as an act of morality to
this cruel industry.
