Experiential Learning Interview

Sonia and I talked about our interests in science and engineering, and
how they corresponded with different experiential learning opportunities.
Sonia has already started some of her potential experiential learning
activities. She currently teaches engineering and science in South Seattle
neighborhoods through the program, Techbridge. Techbridge not only
facilitates science projects, but also hosts engineering seminars that inspire
girls to pursue STEM. She also is a field assistant for Earth Corps, which is a
volunteer organization that help restore parks. Recently, she signed up to
volunteer as a young life leader and she is currently in training. As a young
life leader, she leads small groups and classes at disadvantaged local Seattle
high schools. She mentors high school students after school. All of these
activities are ways Sonia can satisfy the Experiential Learning requirement in
the areas of Service and Leadership.
I talked about my interests in engineering and business and how I
could combine both and apply for a program called CoMotion Mary Gates
Innovation Scholars, which provides summer internship opportunities.
Students in this program get to join UW faculty and other students in
developing intellectual property or patents that startups may use. Im also
interested in joining Engineers Without Borders whose goal is to help
developing communities around the world improve their quality of life
through engineering projects. It is a great way to volunteer internationally.
Finally, I want to study abroad in either England as it is one of the financial
capitals of the world. There is an exchange program to The London School of
Economics & Political Science that Im interested in. I would study
economics, mathematics, and statistics for a whole year in a diverse student
community. All of these activities can count as Research, Service, or
International Engagement, and are great opportunities to learn more about
what goals and interests I want to pursue.
