On Thursday, April 2, 2015,
best-selling young adult author
Varian Johnson visited a select
group of Ladies of Distinction
and Men of Vision who read
two of his novels, My Life as a
Rhombus and Saving Maddie,
respectively. Each group was
given a copy of his book in
February and read it in anticipation for his visit. The Ladies of
Distinction met with Johnson
for the morning session, and the
Men of Vision met in the afternoon. Johnson told the students
an engaging story about how he
transitioned from being an avid reader and writer to a civil engineer and designing a portion
of the George Bush Turnpike to coming full circle and working as a full-time writer.
The 38-year-old African-American South Carolina native revisited characters and
scenes with the students as he led them through a discussion of each book. Johnson also presented "Being Brave in Your Writing" with the Ladies of Distinction where he talked to them
about including sensory details in their writing. Then, the young ladies participated in a writing exercise with Johnson. One of the Ladies of Distinction, senior Makayla Tucker gave
Johnson a copy of a short story she'd written in English class to receive his feedback. The
Ladies of Distinction formed a small, yet enthusiastic line to have Johnson sign their books
before they left.
After lunch with the English department and the administrative team, the Essence
Magazine best-selling author met with 18 young men from Men of Vision to discuss Saving
Maddie. Johnson shared with both groups his experience as a writer and what it took for him
to go from an idea for a character to a manuscript to a published book. The students had the
opportunity to talk to Johnson about everything from whether he ran away from
home, like the character in one of the
books, to how he overcomes writer's
block.
Varian Johnson is the author of
four novels: Red Polka Dots in a World
Full of Plaid, My Life as a Rhombus,
Saving Maddie, and The Great Greene
Heist. Johnson lives in Austin with his
family and continues to work as a writer
both as a young adult novelist and as
marketing writer for the engineered firm
for whom he designed the DFW bridges.
