Dear Mr. and Mrs. Anderson,
I am Samanthas English Honors II teacher and I am writing to you regarding
Samanthas academic progress. Sam is a wonderful student and very dedicated to her
work. She is a classroom leader in citizenship and always ready to help. I really enjoy
having her in my classroom. That is why I am writing to you.
In recent weeks Sams grades have begun to slip and she is missing assignments.
These assignments are: vocabulary homework 3, 5, and 6, The sound of Thunder
annotations, diagraming for units 3 and 6. Several of these assignments are worth a great
deal of points and are bringing her grade down. Her in class work is beyond reproach. She
is active in the class and participates often. She turns in the work we do in class; it is only
the homework assignments she is missing. I had an opportunity to sit and speak with her
today at lunch and discuss what options we have to bring the grade up and help her to
succeed. The pressures of advance placement are currently more than her schedule can
accommodate and we have the option to drop down to a different format. Honors classes
are demanding. They can require a greater amount of work than that of a regular English
classroom and often requiring many hours of homework. This is conflicting with her
extracurricular needs. She can remain in my classroom but placed in a class within a class
of student receiving work better suited for their needs. This is by no means an indicator of
her dedication or ability. It is just a factor of her extracurricular needs and we can reassess
Honors in the future.
In an effort to maintain her grade level I will be removing 0 (zero) grades from the
missing assignments and she will enter the new format with a C. The missing assignments
will simply remain ungraded and not reflect in her overall score. This will give her the
opportunity to recover and succeed for the rest of the semester. I would like to meet at
your earliest convenience to see if this option will work for Samantha.
If you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at
Mrsgillespie@hometownhigh.edu or stop by my classroom during my office hours from 2:15
to 3 pm any day of the week. My classroom line is (602) 555-1212 ext 555.
Sincerely

Lorre Gillespie
