Observation Task 1: Environmental Print in the

Classroom
Table 1: Documenting Environmental Print (Example)
Examples of
Environmental Print

Purpose
Labeling
Demonstrating places of
materials they can use it.
And know the place when
they want to bring it back.

Letters flash cards with

picture that illustrate it.

Labeling of colors in art

corner.
And children work like
drawing, writing.

Ideas for further

development
Using Arabic words
and i think it might
be a good idea if
they write short
sentence.

It is very good idea

to put more than
one example of each
letters. The purpose
of this is to help
children to learn the
letters and match it
with the picture. It
also should be
written in Arabic
because English is
the second
language.
Teacher should
write the name of
each color in Arabic
and English. Using
childrens own
writing builds up
their self-esteem
acknowledging
them as writers
and giving them a
sense of ownership
of the display.

Reflections on Observation Task 1: Environmental in

the Classroom
Read the questions below and choose (1) one to respond to
1. How does environmental print impact students language development,
and their reading and writing abilities?
It impact students language by using flash card which really help students to
read sight word and they can understand what is written. This helps students
in reading so they can see the picture and link the words in their mind with
the letters that written under the picture. It is actually works with a;; students
with different levels.

Observation Task 2: Teaching a Phonics Lesson

The Structure of the Lesson
What the teacher does
Introducing the Sound:
The teacher asks the children
what they think the sound of the
letter by show them the letter N.

What the children do

Answering.

Comments

This is good actually it help the

teacher to give children chance
to answer.

The children try to say the n

sound .
The teacher show them song
about the letter, then she ask
them how can pronounce the
letter.

the teacher show them picture

that start with letter N sound.
The teacher asks them to say the
following words by repeating the
first letter.
Words: noes, nurse, nice, nanny.

Children repeat the words that

start with letter n

The children practice the /n/

sound, by saying the words
that start with letter n

This worked really well. The

children got the idea of the
sound from relating it to the
song by hearing the sound.

It is good to show children

picture that start with the letter
to give them an Idea of the
word that start with sound n.

Hearing the Sound /n/ in the initial

position:
The teacher makes like a game by
saying any words that start with letter
m and they have to say if it starts or
not.
Then she asks them to give her
example of words that start with letter
n.

She says any words that include letter

N either in the beginning or in the
middle or last. So they have to
recognize the letter.

Children answers.
This is good very well it allowed
children to think of words that
start with letter N .

Children answers.

This worked well and allowed

them to focus on the sound /n/
in the different situation in the
words.

Introducing the Writing of the

Sound:
The teacher explains that she is going
to show the children how to write
the /n/ by show them video how to
write. .

The teacher repeats this and asks the

children to copy her movements in the
air with their fingers.

The children sit and watch to

the video.

It helps children to learn how

they can write.

The children repeat the

teachers directions and
write /n/ in the air with their
fingers.

Practicing Writing the Sound

The teacher tells the children that they
will all practice writing the letter /n/
today.
She gives each child boards to write
letter n.

She write on the board

She asks them to get their books from

the locker and start to write the letter.

The children listen attentively.

Children take board.

It is good idea to practice

first on the board so she is
sure that they learn and
they are able to write on
the board.

Children follow her.

Children get their books.

Reflections on Observation Task 2: Teaching a Phonics Lesson

In my school they use jolly phonics to teach children phonics. They also use video
to show them how they can pronounce the sounds. Phonics taught in my school
by show them song of the letter and the teacher did action for each letter
so they can match it with the letter.
They focus on the lesson on how they can pronounce the letter then next day they learn how
to write.
The teacher engage children by ask them to follow her action of the sound and say it with her then
she ask them to answer with her by giving her example to answer. Then she use another type of
engagement which is write letter n in the board.

a) Describe the diff erent types of learning center activities that

the students did.
Circle area to the action and say the sound with her then she
ask them to go next room to write in the books.

Observation Task 3: Teaching Shared/Guided Reading

Title of book:
What the teacher does

Thank garbage
What the children do

The teacher asks children to

look to the cover page and
answer what they can see.

Children say what they see.

She asks them to think what

the story is about and she
asks them about the cover
page question.

Participate with the teacher.

Answer and thinking.

She ask question while she is
telling the story about is it
wright what the child did or
not? She ask them question
about the color.
She ask them is it a good idea
if we throw garbage in our
room or outside or in the
garbage? Is it good behavior
and why they should do that?

Answer

Comments

It is a good idea to let

students answer what they can in
the coverage so they can guess
what the story about. And it is
really helpful to give students a
chance to answer and think about
what the child in the story should
do.

Teacher could extend this

story by let students create
another solution for the boy who
is dirty.

Reflections on Observation Task 3: Teaching Shared/Guided

Reading
1. Which concepts about print (CAP) did the teacher focus on?
The teacher focuses on where they should throw. Also she focuses on place of
garbage and why we have garbage basket. The advantages of keeping our
classroom and city and country clean. She also focuses on the colour she asks
children through the story about the colour.
She also focus on discussion with children.
Then she give them flashcards to order it then they have to repeat the story in order.

2. Were there any initial/medial/final sounds, punctuation, sight words or word

families that were covered during the lesson? If they were, select (a); if they were
not, select (b).
a. W h a t was the purpose of teaching these concepts? Explain its importance.
She uses presentation to do an activity through it like match, circle the correct
behaviour.
The purpose is to learn keep places clean and do not throw garbage. And learn new vocab
such as garbage baskets, rubbish container, cleaner, recycle.
Words like: on, in, under, behind, and in front.

Observation Task 4: Development of Early Writing Skills

Focus:
Identify the early developmental writing stages and strategies within
those stages
Objective: Identify the developmental stages and strategies used by your MST to
support the development of early writing skills in students
Procedure: Familiarize yourself with the Observation Table: Development of Early
Writing Skills. Identify the developmental writing stage the student is in, the outcomes
that the activity addresses and a brief description of the activity. For example, K2LP1
Identify beginning sounds heard in words

Reflections on Observation Task 4: Development of Early Writing

Skills

I actually like what the teacher did with students I found it very useful students can
actually learn through it. I observe that students developmental writing stages in
using clay, board, paper, and colouring. I suggest two strategies which are using craft
and using own work; pictures, paintings, collage, worksheets which helps children to
recognize the form of the letter and learn how to write it.
These strategies help to develop students in writing.
