Medford couple Gloria Barone
Rosanio and Jim Rosanio recently released their newest book,
Eat to Roar! and held a community release party to celebrate. In
their book, which includes
recipes from Glorias lifelong
friend, Karina Pearse-LaMalfa,
kids learn about food allergies
from Dina the Dinosaur Connoisseur and her kitchen sidekick
Saber-Tooth Kitty.
There are so many people living with chronic illness in our
country and around the world,
and a good deal of that stems
from our food choices, obesity
and malnourishment, said Gloria, who authors the books alongside Jim, who is the illustrator.
We wanted to help instill a love
of simple cooking and healthy
food at an early age, so that perhaps children will find the
healthy choice to also be the fun
and tasty choice, and will carry
that into adulthood.
What makes this book especially unique is all of Dinas
friends have issues with different
foods. While the main character
loves to host dinosaur dinner
parties, she must be mindful that

give the Medford Township Public Schools Board of Education
an update on his environmental
education endeavors, Keagy,
along with four of his students,
gave a presentation at the Monday, Nov. 21 board meeting.
The goal of Keagys presentation was to illustrate the need to
get kids to spend more time outdoors as well as to show the steps
that have worked to address those
concerns. Additionally, it served
as a way to lay out what steps
need to be taken to improve these
efforts.
This is an important educational skill. We talk a lot about incorporation of technology, we

Eat to Roar would be a great way
to engage children in healthy
food without being preachy about
it.
Dinas dining dilemmas were
discussed at a release party at the
Pinelands Branch Library, located at 39 Allen Ave., on Saturday,
Nov. 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Here, holiday arts and crafts were
featured, there was dinosaur entertainment, fun facts about dinosaurs and how they ate, and
recipes and healthy snacks from
the Eat to Roar cookbook. Attendees also had the opportunity
to meet the Rosanios.
Although Eat to Roar is hot
off the press, the couple has been
crafting childrens books together
since 2010 when they published
the book, Flip Flop Flo, the
Know-It-All. The idea for the
story stemmed from their daughter, Kaitlyn, and the time years
ago when she would refuse to take
off her flip flops until an incident

on the playground taught her flip

flops are for summer, not for
school.
Today, Kaitlyn is 29 years old
and has two daughters of her
own, ages 5 and 8 months. Gloria
now consults with her daughter
about the interests of her granddaughter, Payton, and together
they bounce story ideas off the 5year-old.
She is our own private focus
group, Gloria said.
After the release of Flip Flop
Flo, the Know-It-All, the Rosanios started their own book services and publishing company, giving rise to Medford-based Payton
Press. Six years after their first
release and the founding of their
publishing company, the Rosanios published their second book,
Pedros Hungry Ride about a
boy on a bike in search of a
healthy snack, and who also wishes to find out the story of how his
town came together to plant a

Use caution when driving on the roads, especially this time of year

Richard Donnelly

ow many times have you seen

it: People driving around town
throwing caution to the wind,
as if they were on a NASCAR track?
Youd think someone was giving away
free $100 bills.
Do they not know we have children
walking around town? Do they not
care about the safety of other motorists? Do they not care about their
own safety?
Seems like today, everyone is in a
rush at all times; it seems like its getting worse with each passing year.
Somehow, by some miracle, New Jersey drivers arent the worst in the nation, at least according to an annual

list of the nations worst drivers.
If were not the worst, wed hate to
be on the road in Minnesota, whose
drivers were collectively ranked as the
worst in the nation.
Even though were not as bad as
some of our American brethren, its

worth repeating: Slow down out there!

Nothing can be of such importance
that you need to speed and drive erratically ... every time you drive! Its just
not possible that your wife is giving
birth for the fifth time this week.
Our children are walking our
streets. Our elderly are still behind the

out on the roads, trying to get shopping

Lets make sure everyone gets where

being such maniacs even if were not

ChildrenSong to perform free concert

at Medford Friends Meeting House Dec. 3
As young singers fill the Medford
Friends Meeting House with music on Saturday, Dec. 3, more than one tradition is
being honored. Medford Quakers have
been offering a holiday concert for more
than a quarter-century as a holiday gift to
their neighbors and friends. The childrens
performance also honors the 203-year-old
meetinghouse that offers singers gently
aged walls as a sounding board for their
music. The noted choir, ChildrenSong of
New Jersey, now in its 17th season, will
present a free concert at 7 p.m. at Medford
Friends Meeting House, located at 14 Union
St., during the historic villages Dickens
Festival.
According to Artistic Director Polly
Murray, the concert will feature selections

from Henry Purcell's Come Ye Sons of

Art, a ceremonial ode written for the
birthday celebration of Queen Mary in
1684. Other selections include Thomas
Morley's Lirum, Lirum and Dean
Rishel's Personent Hodie written by the
Philadelphia composer and commissioned
by ChildrenSong. Murray also promises
seasonal favorites such as Carol of the
Bells and a traditional holiday sing-along.
The young singers will be honored for
their excellence as they travel in summer
2017 on their first European tour to Germany, Italy, Austria and Iceland, performing in the Alta Pusteria International
Choral Festival, including a performance
in Reykjavik before returning to New Jersey.

Please recycle this newspaper.

Murray founded ChildrenSong of New

Jersey in 2000 as a choral music education
and performance program based in Haddonfield. The program serves 75 children
in four choirs between the ages of 8 and 18
from Camden, Burlington and Gloucester
counties.
All are welcome and no tickets are needed. The house opens at 6:30 p.m. A reception will follow the concert. The Pinelands
Garden Club will again offer handmade
wreaths and arrangements. Medford
Friends have worshipped on the site since
1759. Meeting for Worship and First Day
(Sunday) School are concurrent at 10 a.m.
All are welcome. For more information,

Medford Leas lecture to focus on peregrine falcons

In a lecture being given at Medford Leas, located at One Medford
leas Way, Restoring the Peregrine Falcon to Pennsylvania,
community members can learn
how Arthur McMorris has
worked with the Pennsylvania
Game Commission to re-establish
a self-sustaining and secure population of falcons that are making
one of the most remarkable recoveries of any endangered
species anywhere. The event is

being held on Saturday, Dec. 10

from 11 a.m. to noon in the Medford Leas Theater.
Although the peregrine falcon
was removed from the United
States endangered species list in
1999, the birds still have not yet
recovered completely from once
being nearly wiped out from
North America east of the Rockies and south of the Arctic.
This lecture is being offered at
no cost, and registration is not re-

quired. McMorris has bachelors

and doctoral degrees in biology.
He coordinates the Peregrine Falcon Recovery and Management
Program for the Pennsylvania
Game Commission and participates in a variety of other bird
studies and conservation projects. He is past president of the
Delaware Valley Ornithological
Club and works with several
other bird and conservation organizations.

Blaze rages through Wharton State Forest

Fire burned more than 200 acres of woodland, but was contained by firefighters
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun

6 09 - 5 8 6 - 2 30 0

A fire at Wharton State Forest

burned more than 200 acres on

the southwest side of Route 206

on Tuesday, Nov. 22. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service, along
with the Waterford Fire Department and the State Park Police,

worked to contain the fire. The

fire was under control by Wednesday, Nov. 23.
Right now, we are concentrating on containing the fire, Forest
Fire Service Division C Warden
William Donnelly said last Tuesday.
The fire was reported to the
Forest Fire Service at 1:30 a.m. on
Tuesday last week and is believed
to have started at Sandy Causeway in the Waterford/Hammonton area, near the Atlantic County line, according to Donnelly. The
cause of the fire is under investigation.
The forest fire has reportedly

burned 200 acres; however, there

were no injuries, and no structures or roadways affected by the
fire.
There has been no impact on
the general public, Donnelly
said.
The Forest Fire Service worked
to contain the fire by plowing control lines around the fire and having a back burn to combat it.
According to Donnelly, South
and Central Jersey have been
under a high fire danger warning
due to the dry weather, low humidity and windy conditions.
As of 6 p.m. last Tuesday, the
fire was 100 percent contained.

races, shelter building, dog sledding, archery, canoeing, campfire
activities and a campsite set up.
As I look back on my years at
Chairville, one unique experience that stands out is the Outdoors Club, Andreas LaRosa, a
fifth grader at the Chairville
School, said. I know for sure that
I would have just been bored inside on a rainy day, but instead I
had an unforgettable experience
and adventure in the rain on a
canoe trip with the club.
Similarly, the Environmental
Club has helped students take
ownership in the outdoor learning opportunities on Chairvilles
school grounds by providing a
hands-on emphasis on environmental education. The club has
also worked to contribute to projects that can be translated to the
entire student body. Examples of
these projects include the constructing of a habitat creation,
the establishment of plant identification signs on permanent display, and making and posting trail
blazes to mark local nature trails.

(Cherry Hill, NJ) -- The Freeholder

The 60 foot by 120 foot ice rink
is currently being constructed in
the center of Cooper River Parks
Jack Curtis Stadium located at 5300
North Park Drive in Pennsauken.
The park will be transformed into

The Winterfest Ice

open Monday through

from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.,
on Saturday from noon
to 10 p.m., and on Sunday from noon to 9 p.m.
Children 4 years of
age and younger will
be admitted onto the ice
for free. There is a $4
admission fee for kids
5 to 12. Admission for
adults is $6 and a $4.00
skate rental fee for all
ages. In addition, there
is plenty of free parking

the stadium. Visit www.skatewinterfest.com for information on skating lessons and more.
This is another great reason to

talk a lot about 21st century skills,

but I think environmental education has a place just like anything
else, Keagy said.
In expressing why the Outdoors Club, and the Environmental Club he also founded, were
necessary, Keagy explained that
in his research, he found American children ages 3 to 12 spend
only 1 percent of their time outdoors, only 10 percent of children
spend time outdoors every day,
and that Americans spend 93 percent of their time indoors.
In response, the founded Outdoors Club was to allow students
to participate in a diverse choice
of local outdoor activities and to
foster a personal direct experience in nature. By providing
these experiences, Keagy believes
the club is able to foster a positive
relationship between students
and the environment.
Thus far, the Outdoors Club,
which has 120 students signed up
this year, has participated in fish-

Club because I wanted to help the

local community and learn more
about the environment, Rebecca
Wargo, a fifth grader at the
Chairville School who was in attendance at the Board of Education meeting, said. The cool part
of the Environmental Club is that
I dont only benefit. All of
Chairville gets to learn from the
projects we do. I hope this helps
our world and the environment.
We only have one.
Keagy emphasized to the board
that there is still a need for more
environmental education to improve environmental literacy and
competency among Chairville
students.
He suggested a number of potential actions be taken that include integrating environmental
education into the interdisciplinary curriculum, the development of a stand-alone environmental education curriculum and
an expansion of outdoor teaching
spaces. He also wishes to see the
school build its sustainability initiatives connected to student
work, create no-cost, no-travel
field trips on its own grounds and
for it to advocate and prioritize
time outdoors.
This is a pretty unique club
for an elementary school, Joseph
Del Rossi, the districts superintendent, said. Not only are there
in-school activities, but it extends
outside of the school, and Mr.
Keagy is a true component of environmental education.

Medford Leas to host event for 10th year
New and unique vendors will
enliven and expand the Holiday
Craft Fair on Saturday, Dec. 3 at
Medford Leas.
This is the 10th annual edition
of the juried craft sale, which is
renowned for its one-of-a-kind,
handcrafted items. The sale begins at 9 a.m. and will run to 4
p.m. in Medford Leas Arts and Social Wing located at One Medford
Leas Way on Route 70. Admission
and parking are free, and all are
welcome.
An auction of 25 carefully selected objects will accompany the
craft fair. They range from a bejeweled Burmese wall hanging to
a hand-turned walnut bowl. Included are a hand-knitted patchwork sweater, antique duck decoy,
vintage Irish crystal pitcher and
folding teacart with removable
trays. Medford Leas residents donated all these items and more.
Of special note this year will be
a pair of adult coloring books featuring line art drawings by members of the Medford Leas arts stu-

dio. Entitled Fine Art and Natural World, the coloring books
offer a diversity of opportunities
for colorists to personalize their
pictures. The drawings can be
easily removed from their protective binders for coloring or for
framing and hanging once completed.
Maggie Heineman, the chairwoman, says about this years
event, We have expanded to a
third room since we will offer
over 30 craft tables this year. We
are delighted to showcase so
many fine crafts-makers and welcome 1,000 visitors to our community. In addition, the ever-popular wreathe and greens section
will be relocated to the ground
floor next to the elevator. This
will make it easier for shoppers to
carry their armfuls of evergreens
to their cars through the nearby
doors to the parking lot.
The annual Holiday Craft Fair
and Auction will benefit the Medford Leas residents assistance
fund.
