5, October 2016
Language Arts: Grade 7
A study in Frankenstein
Objective:
Students will identify common themes and ideas within Mary Shelleys Frankenstein by defining
key terms found throughout the novel. Then students will determine a theme or central idea of a
text and analyze its development over the course of the text; including its relationship to the
characters, setting, and plot and provide an objective summary of the book.
Common Core Standard: 8.RL.2
Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the
text, including its relationship to the characters, setting, and plot; provide an objective summary
of the text.
1. Empowered Learner
c. Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to
demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.
Anticipatory Set (used also as Bell Ringer Activity):
Think back to the definitions we went over yesterday. The five words we discussed were dilate,
capacious, ardent, wretched and harrowing. Go over the definitions and write them on the board.
Have each student write the definitions for all five words from the board, and then give the

students one minute thirty seconds to write down the definitions from the board. Then call on
students randomly to repeate the definitions using popsicle sticks and Ask-Pause-Call to check
for understanding. Go over the definitions if needed.
Segue:
Today we are going to go over the format for your narrative essays and the guidelines for having
a completed essay.
Information (I Do):
The following outline (on the last page) will be used to teach the students how to compose a
narrative essay. I will give each student a copy of the handout below and go over the guidelines
for the outline. Students can take notes accordingly. After explaining the parts of the handout I
will give them five minutes to work with their face partner to help brainstorm ideas for their
individual essay. Instruct the students on the procedure of the handout.
Face Partner Work (We Do):
After explaining the parts of the handout I will give them five minutes to work with their face
partner to help brainstorm ideas for their individual essay. Then, have students point to their face
partner. Once they are with their face partner instruct them to brainstorm ideas that align to the
previously taught five definitions.
Information (I Do):
Once the five minutes is up, I will give the auditory signal hocus pocus everybody focus. Any
questions that may be left I will answer as needed. I will call random students randomly as well
as take any questions posed by the class by doing Ask-Pause-Call. Then, they will fill out the

sheet to organize their topic ideas. The three definitions they choose will come from one of the
five definitions that we have already gone over. This will help to explore new ideas for their
narrative essay.
Guided Practice (We Do):
After they are done in the five-minute break off we will go over the topic sentence together and
how to write a correct topic sentence. I will check for understanding of the concept by again
calling on students randomly. After they have understood the concept they will complete number
one on the handout sheet which is writing a topic sentence.
Extended Practice (Homework):
Once the students have a clear meaning of the outline to their narrative essays they will need to
write two-page narrative essay as homework. The essay will be either typed or hand written with
correct spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Closure:
Students will be quizzed over the concept of the handout by teacher using Ask-Pause-Call. The
students will be quizzed on the five definitions to use in their paper, and over the outline handout
to check for understanding. Any questions about the handout will be answered.
Assessment:
Define these five words:
1. dilate: make or become wider, larger, or more open
2. capacious: having a lot of space inside; roomy
