This document provides context for instructional lessons being developed for middle school band students preparing for a regional band audition. It describes the students, who come from various backgrounds including below the poverty level, and the rationale for offering private lessons to help students advance beyond classroom time constraints. The goal of the private lessons is to help students score above a 75 on the audition requirements like scales, terms and a solo, in order to qualify for the regional band.

Instructional Analyst Context:
My classes are at Colleton County Middle School in Walterboro, SC. My class
consists of 60 students ranging from all demographic backgrounds. Many of my students come from homes below the poverty level that is set by our federal government. Many times I encounter students who would like to be in band but cannot afford an instrument. So as a teacher I try to find creative ways to get an instrument into their hands so they can participate. Throughout the school year there are many opportunities for students to participate in activities provided by the SCBDA (South Carolina Band Directors Association). One of these special events is Region Band. Region Band is a clinic provided by SCBDA where students spend the weekend with some of the nations finest music educators. In order for the students to take part in this event they must audition. There are several steps to the audition: Scales, Terms, Chromatic Scale, Tone, Sight Reading, and Solo. As their director I try to find ways to better instruct them and develop programs to help them prepare for the process. My classes are made up of 2 males to every 8 females. My students come from African American background. As the band director I pick from each section at least one individual who I feel will represent the school in a professional manner. Rationale: Private lessons are an opportunity for the individual musician to take the material they learn in class or for region band and advance beyond the time constraints of class. I developed this several years back because I found that when students were being asked to audition for this group they did not always have the time or the ability to play the material and I as their director did not have the time to make sure they could so I had to develop a way that they could get extra instruction. The private lessons are held after school and they are mandatory for those auditioning for region band. They last approximately 30 minutes and will cover material to ready students for region band. Performance Context of Learners and Implications of Instruction:
The implications of instruction for these students are based on their need for additional help in order to prepare for Region Band. Not every student will need as much help as the next student but the opportunity for extra help is there and they need to take advantage of it. Students will be assessed on the material when first given. I will determine the things they do well and the things they do not so well. I will then prioritize the material in the order I think the students need to work on it based on the first assessment of understanding. Instructional Goal Statement: The instructional goal is to get my region band students to score above a 75 total score on the audition. If they score a 75 or above on the audition they have a chance to make Region Band. In order to see that this happens I am offering the private lesson opportunity for students auditioning. These lessons will be formatted based on the early assessment of their ability to play the required material. Goal Analysis: Based on the instructional goal the students will be able to do the following:
Perform all 7 major scales by memory
Play their chromatic scale by memory Know all their terms Have a good tone Play their etude or solo
