Robyn Myers: Annotated Bibliography
Robyn Myers: Annotated Bibliography
Introduction:
I am currently a 28 year old stay at home mom. I go to school full time and have not yet started teaching. I dont have my
heart set on any particular grade that I would like to teach. I feel that at any grade level or age, I will be able to make a great impact.
My goal for reading 30 childrens books this semester is to hopefully find a few new authors that I will fall in love with. I
hope to also learn more about the different types of books that are out there and find fun, interesting and educational ways to
incorporate them into my classroom. I want my students to be able to find books and read books that can open their imagination and
allow them to create a whole new world. Do you know the four most powerful words in the English language? They are once upon
a time, (Johnson 2009). Both children and adults are reminded of fantasy and imagination when they hear these four little words. It
is amazing the effect that words and reading can have on someone.
Children who do not learn to read well early in school are more likely to fail subjects later in school, (Johnson 2009). I plan to read
to my students every day. In order to get their attention they must be books that grab their attention and they can relate too. In
choosing my books, I am looking for books that have won awards and can be found on a childs must read list. I am looking for books
with catchy titles and bright colorful pictures that will first attract the reader and encourage and motivate them to pick it up and read it.
Reflection:
Everything about this process was new to me. I have never thought so deeply about the different ways I could incorporate books into
my classroom. I hear teachers say all the time that there is not enough time with the FCAT to teach Science and History; however,
after seeing the variety of books that are out there, there is really no reason not to. I was surprised at how many books are available
for teachers to use. Teachers have the ability to teach Science and History while teaching students what they need to know for the
FCAT. Some of my favorite books from this experience are Where the Wild Things Are, Dear Mr. Henshaw, and You Read to Me,
Ill Read to you. In the future, I think I would love to have more time to sit in the library and start reading books one after another. I
think it would be great to be able to spend hours in the library reading childrens books, making a list of the different lessons I could
create from them! Also, I felt a little limited having to stick with certain genres, but I came to understand the importance of it! I will
definitely be keeping and using this list in my classroom one day. I will also have my upper grade level students create one as well. I
feel that it would be a good way to get them reading and learning about different genres of books, just as I did!
