The purpose of the book Immigrants Kids to inform the reader about immigration.
Immigrant Kids is a nonfiction informational book with a theme of overcoming obstacles
because of an immigration situation. This book was written during the late 1800s and early 1900s
and provides many examples of daily struggles immigrates have to experience. Freedman has
travel extensively and gather most of his information giving in Immigrants Kids and forty-seven
other books he has written. The fact the Freedman has travel and witness many of this situation
makes him a creditable source of information regarding this topic. In this particular book
Freedmans audience is children. The information that the book contains is written in
chronological order, first explaining the struggle to travel overseas in a boat. After that,
Freedman explains the daily struggles of an immigrant. Some of those struggles mentioned in the
text include a school, in the streets, and at work. He also presents a convincing argument because
he provides the reader with true event pictures throughout the book. Furthermore, the

illustrations are essential to the story because they create the story as the reader is reading the
book. The pictures are clear and relate to the content of the book. The artwork is appropriate for
the children because they are clear black and white pictures that help the reader connect to what
Freedman is trying to convey. Immigrant Kids also contains an index, at the end of the story, that
is clearly written and easy to understand.
