SYNOPSIS
The course deals with the engineering activities concerned with the exploitation of chemical
reactions on a commercial scale. Its goal is the successful design and operation of chemical
reactors which set the chemical engineering apart as a distinct branch of engineering
profession. Thus, in designing and operating chemical reactors, important topics including
strong fundamentals in chemical kinetics, types of reactors and simple design approach to
more complex design are also discussed.

3.0

OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
1.
2.
3.
4.

4.0

Apply principles related to chemical reactions to determine rate kinetics.

Perform basic design and predict the operating performance of different types of reactors
e.g. batch, continuous stirred tank and tubular flow reactors for single/multiple reactions
under isothermal and non-isothermal conditions.
Apply the principles of catalytic reactions and design simple heterogeneous reactors.
Apply the knowledge of this subject in carrying out chemical engineering projects.
