PhilosophyStatementforDanceEducationintheElementarySchool
TheeducationachildreceivesfromkinderthroughfifthgradeuntheUnitedStatesis
veryimportantbecauseitisthefoundationthatthechildwillreceivetosucceedinfuture
schooling.Itisveryimportantthatduringachildsearlyeducation,theyareexposedtoasmany
differentsubjectsaspossible.Currently,Ibelievethatthereismuchmorefocusonstudenttest
scoresanddifferentperformanceteststhansubjectslikevisualandperformingarts.Theyarenot
emphasizedasmuchaslanguageartsandmathematics.Inmyopinion,allsubjectsareequallyas
importantandshouldbetaughtduringtheregularschoolday.
Artsineducationshouldbeincludedineverydaylessonsbecausehavingthemexposedto
theartsreinforcesothersubjects.Dance,music,theater,andvisualartsprogramsareallcritical
forachildseducation.Thesesubjectsallowstudentstoexpressthemselvesinwaystheymight
notbeabletoinothersubjectssuchasreadingandwriting.Iamcertainthatsomeoftheissues
withimplementingartsintotheeverydaycurriculumissomewhatofachallengeduetonot
havingenoughtimeduringtheday,butIbelieveaversatileteacherwouldbeabletoblendor
incorporatelessonstogethersuchasmathematicsanddancetoteachalesson.Itsallabout
findinginnovativewaystoteachstudentsmorethanonesubjectatatime.
Rhythmanddanceactivitiescontributemanybenefitstoastudentseducation.Theyhelp
developgrossmotorskills,andalsoallowstudentstobecreativeintheirownway.Rhythmand
dancegivesstudentsanoutlettoexpressthemselvesandnotfeelliketheyarebeingjudged.
