NDP play political games, obstruct legislation that helps veterans
NDP filibustering on bill they supported only two weeks ago: Curry Nic Curry, Progressive Conservative MLA for Kildonan, is calling on the NDP to stop their filibuster of Bill 213, which extends the current employment preference for veterans to include Canadian Forces reservists who were in active service. Bill 213 was introduced during the first session of the 41st Legislature earlier this fall. All parties unanimously agreed to fast-track the bill during Remembrance Week. During debate, NDP house leader Jim Maloway said, We will stand with one voice here in the Legislature for our military, our veterans, and their services, and we do support this bill and that were prepared to vote on it now. In the subsequent vote that day, the bill passed second reading with unanimous support from all parties and was referred to committee. A motion was made yesterday to allow the bill to proceed to committee without further delay. Instead of passing this simple motion, the NDP chose to play political games and blocked the bill from proceeding. Im disappointed with the doublespeak from the NDP when it comes to helping our veterans. Although they spoke in favour of Bill 213 at second reading and voted for it unanimously during Remembrance Week, the NDP are now playing political games with this important legislation for those who serve our country in the Armed Forces, said Curry. I call on the NDP caucus to show they care about veterans who serve in the reserves, reconsider their partisan obstruction of Bill 213 and work to pass this motion before the Legislature rises on Friday. -30-
