To the Hiring Manager at Innovative Automation,

I am writing to express my interest in the position of Junior Mechanical Designer. I received my

BScE in Engineering Physics (Mechanical stream) from Queens University in May 2016 and I am
currently employed at Honda of Canada Mfg. I decided to acquire hands-on manufacturing
experience this summer in order to learn how manufacturing companies manage logistics, quality,
waste, and process engineering. This manufacturing experience compliments my academic
background in engineering, mathematics, and science, and has prepared me for a career in
Manufacturing Engineering. The motivations which drove me to engineering included a desire to
improve sustainability, reduce environmental impact, and increase quality in Canadas industries. I
admire Innovative Automations sense of responsibility towards safety, environment, ethics, and
quality. It is for this reason I hope to join your team.
The Engineering Physics program has given me a unique background in mechanical engineering,
statistical analysis, and measurement skills. I have selected courses which I believe are relevant to
automation and manufacturing including automatic control systems, robotic programming,
manipulator modeling, and autonomous mining vehicles. I have demonstrated effective use of my
3D CAD skills. I used Solid Edge to compose 3D assemblies of the sun-path inspired awning frame
I developed for Queens Solar Design Team. These assembly drawings were used to machine the
aluminum awning frames, which are now in use on Queens off-grid solar housing unit. For a part
of my involvement with the Queens Aero Design Team, I used SolidWorks to perform FMEAs on
different air foil designs; work which contributed to the Universitys improving performance at the
SAE Aero Design Competition. I have taken initiative in teamwork, whether it be as a leader or as
a member in general. I recognize the importance of understanding the responsibilities of my
teammates in ensuring my contributions are as informed, relevant, and effective as possible. As
th
team leader of my 4 year superconducting maglev train project, I lead a group of four students
in all levels of project management. This project involved earning funding, receiving quotes from
companies, managing legal requirements, and producing a durable, cost-effective, and functional
product. Through this project and others, including my undergraduate thesis, I have
demonstrated strong presentation skills.
I know I would be a valuable asset to Innovative Automation. My team-oriented mindset, eye for
design, and motivated personality would go a long way within your company. I thank you for your
time and consideration, and hope to hear back from you soon.

Sincerely,

Eric Ebner
