The Literacy of Humanity: My Words
The literacy I most want to learn about is civil engineering. It is my dream career to be a
civil engineer. Civil engineers are in charge of infrastructure they build and maintain road,
bridges, dams, and many other similar structures. I define literacy as ones knowledge and
mastery of something and the ability to explain or teach that knowledge that has been gained.
I have always had a certain passion about buildings and bridges. I got to go to Mexico
last summer I stayed in the city of San Miguel de Allende. The city was a historical heritage site,
so all the buildings in the city had to be historically accurate and the houses had to look like
colonial houses on the outside. When I stepped into the buildings, the first thing I noticed was
the ceiling. The ceiling was curved and made of brick that was laid in certain patterns. After
seeing this, all I wanted to know was how it worked and how it was made. I have the same
question on how buildings like Burj Khalifa (worlds tallest building) can even be built. I want to
know what allows these building to pierce through the sky.
I want to master this (deleted also) so I can have an impact on others the way some
people have had on me. I got the chance to do an internship at a company, Andrew Pearson
Design. Andrew Pearson is a furniture company that makes completely glass furniture. Getting
the chance to work with this company gave me hands on experiences that I would never believe I

could have. I was able to go to the High Point Furniture Market and I was able to design my own
prototype table. I got to know the president of the company Dr. Sue Brownfield.
Dr. Brownfield became my first mentor. Getting to know her and talk to her solidified my
desire to be an engineer. Dr. Brownfield has a masters for mechanical engineering and a
doctorate in industrial engineering. She was an executive at GM for many years and is now a
successful owner of her own company. Being a woman trying to go into engineering, it was
inspiring to know a woman who is so successful. It showed me that I can also be just as
successful and I want to inspire others like the way she inspired me.

Review: There were a few sentences that needed to be fixed, so I edited them
(highlighted in red). Nothing major had to be done to this as a whole. The theming for the Prezi
works for the idea of engineering. The Prezi has some things that make it stand out from the
draft, but there are a few similarities between the two parts. But overall, I think you did a good
job with this draft.
