I've lived in Rome for more than 40 years (except when I'm traveling!) and have had the
pleasure of introducing many friends visiting with their teens, to some of my most favorite
spots. I hope I know the city well enough by now to be able to recommend some truly
memorable places for your family vacation!

Key Tips
Restaurant mealtimes in Rome tend to be as
follows: lunch, 12-3pm; and dinner 8-11pm. If
the evening meal is much later than you would
normally eat, best make lunch the main meal of
the day, and pick up some snacks for later in the
evening. Gelato and pizza sold by the slice are
also widely available, and make for good inbetween nourishment!
Getting around
The metro (subway) is definitely the best way to
move around the city, and covers all the major
tourist spots. If you want to experience the fun of
the bus, download the city's public transport app
to plan your journeys.

A symbol of wealth for ancient
people was the abundance of
water, and the Romans displayed their
awesome power by giving their city a large
number of aqueducts. Relive the power of
the Roman Empire at this park, where you
can admire the remains of some of the
greatest works of Roman engineering.

Built in 1626 to replace the
sixteenth-century Church of the
Annunciation, and dedicated to the father of
the Society of Jesus, canonized in 1622, this
beautiful house of worship is filled with
fantastic paintings, and optical illusions.

Set on the Appian Way, this very
simple church is dedicated to
Santa Maria in Palmis, but has always been
known as Domine Quo Vadis - which
literally translates to 'Lord, where are you
going?'. Inside, you'll find two footprints
indented into a marble slab on the floor,
which are said to have been miraculously
left by Jesus! As well as its rustic aesthetic
appeal, and reputation as a site of miracles,
it also makes for a convenient rest stop
while you and your pals are exploring the
rest of the sights along Via Appia.

One of the most characteristic
views in Rome is this medieval
courtyard, where you'll find this beautiful
arc surrounded by traditional houses from
the same period. If you're looking for a
place to escape the chaos of the streets for a
while, and regroup - literally! - this quiet
corner of Rome is the perfect spot to do just
that.

One of the most beautiful basilicas
in Rome is handily nestled in the
heart of one of the city's most fun
neighborhoods! Check this beautiful church
off your list, and then enjoy getting lost in
the alleyways of Trastevere, sampling a
whole host of Roman delicacies as you go.

In Trinit dei Monti, you can visit
one of the finest examples of an
artist's home in Italy. The Palazzo Zuccari
was built in 1592 by Federico Zuccari, and
its exterior is particularly interesting featuring grotesque Mannerist masks
which are very close in style to the Sacred
Wood of Bomarzo. Even if you don't
venture inside, the facade makes for some
great photo ops!

Both the layout and the location
of this museum make it a really
lovely place to explore - even for friends
who normally 'don't do' museums. Plus, the
rich collection of Roman and Greek statues
is undeniably impressive, and what makes
this venue the twentieth most visited
museum in Italy!

Why not indulge in a cultural
aperitivo? Situated in Monti, this
chapel is a rare gem of neo-Renaissance
architecture, rich in precious marble and
metal, and contains the impressive
paintings of Constantine Brumidi. And if
that's not enough to persuade your less
culturally-inclined friends, the Rione Monti
district is also famous for its aperitivo scene
- visit the chapel in the afternoon and
reward yourselves with a good aperitif at
the end of your tour!
