Tim Smit was born in 1955 in the Netherlands of an English mother and a Dutch father. Because his father
worked for KLM airlines his parents lived abroad. Tim didnt live with them but went to an English boarding
school, which he hated. On holidays in Turkey he became interested in archaeology and studied it at university.
After university he got a job as an archaeologist at a museum in the north of England. He loved the job but he
didnt earn a good salary so instead he began a career as a rock musician in London and started a band. In
1982 the band had a number one hit in the thirteen countries. Five years later he moved to Cornwall with his wife
and three young children, and this move brought the biggest change in his life.
