ME-351: Design Tutorial 01

F
1.0 The inspection port of a furnace has a diameter of
D
100 mm. It is closed by a threaded cap, with a

handle as shown in figure. The handle has a

cylindrical portion of diameter D, which is welded

to the cap. The cap is tightened by applying a force

perpendicular to the knurled area (CD). The force
can be applied anywhere in the knurled area. To
ensure proper sealing of the port, the cap has to be

tightened to a torque of T N.m. Once the cap is

tightened, a 5 mm diameter pin is inserted into the

hole in the cylindrical portion of the handle at B to
lock it from someone opening by oversight (the exact locking mechanism is not shown here).
Determine the diameter D using von-Mises criteria for a minimum design factor nd of 1.4. Take
SAE 1045, HR steel as the material.

The outrigger of a traveling crane used for loading ships is

shown in figure. The beam AB weighs 2 kN. The boom BC is
made of a square section as shown in figure. The 2 kN
carriage is symmetric about its load line and can travel in the
range (2 m s 8m). The maximum weight of the container
the crane is expected to handle is W kN. From the given cross
sections, choose one for the boom such that the minimum
factor of safety against buckling is 5. Choose the crosssection such a way that the weight is minimum (i.e. do not
over design). After choosing the cross-section, determine the
factor of safety for buckling in both planes. The connections
at A, B and C can be assumed as pin joints and you can
assume these joints to be frictionless. The sections are made of steel for which the yield strength
is 450 MPa and elastic modulus is 200 GPa.
