Some political discussions are
best left at home
POLITICS IS ALWAYS A TOUCHY SUBJECT in
the office, and with the upcoming election, its
more volatile than ever. There is a time and
place to talk about politics, and neither of
those is while you are at work. But if you absolutely cant stop the conversation, here are
some dos and donts to keep in mind.
r DO
Know Your Company Policy: The thing to do
would be to follow any policies or procedures
your employer has in place, says employment
attorney Archibald Thomas. Dont have a conversation in the presence of someone who
doesnt have the same views.
Think Twice Before You Post Online: Remember, once its posted its forever. Its just a
matter of whether the employer wants to restrict that kind of outside activity, says
Thomas.
r DONT
Pry: Just because youre comfortable or unoffended talking about it doesnt mean everyone else will be, too.
Touch Heated Issues: Political issues to avoid
during office talk are those that are tied to religious or moral opinions. These are most
likely to offend and can cause permanent rifts
in office relationships.
Let Your Guard Down After Work: Most employees are what are known as at will employees, who can be terminated or disciplined for
virtually anything, says Thomas. It doesnt
matter that much whether conduct is on the
job or off the job. by Taylor Nelson
