Task 1.

Mathematics in the School & My Classroom

Examine the table of contents for the math textbook used at your Teaching Practice Placement.

- How does the content align with the CCSS for your grade level?
I noticed that the content of the grade one math book fits the goals of CCSS standard.
The Book Content: McGraw-Hill Education:
1. Counting and count objects in a group
Unit A: Numbers from 0 to 5
Unit B: Numbers until 10
Unit C: Numbers beyond 10

2. Operations and Algebraic Thinking

Unit 1: Addition concept
Unit 2: Subtraction concept
Unit 3: Addition strategies until number 20
Unit 4: Subtraction strategies until number 20

3. Numbers and Operations in base ten system

Unit 5: Place value
Unit 6: Add and subtract numbers with two digits

4. Measurement and Data

Unit 7: Organize and use graphical representations

Unit 8: Measurement and Time

5. Geometry
Unit 9: Two-dimensional Shapes and the equal parts
Unit 10: Three-dimensional Shapes

As in CCSS standard form, it states that "in grade 1, instructional time should focus on four critical areas:
(1) developing understanding of addition, subtraction, and strategies for addition and subtraction within
20; (2) developing understanding of whole number relationships and place value, including grouping in
tens and ones; (3) developing understanding of linear measurement and measuring lengths as iterating
length units; and (4) reasoning about attributes of, and composing and decomposing geometric shapes".

So it is obvious that CCSS standard objectives fit the objectives of the math curriculum, and they contain
the same goals to achieve during the semester.

Observe the math classroom arrangement (desks, shelves, materials, walls, etc.) Take pictures to
post in your portfolio.

They are setting in pairs in rows form, and they organize the bags beside their tables or at the back of the
class, but mostly it is beside their tables. The teacher organizes the tables once she gets in the
classroom because grade one students are always missing their tables up. Furthermore, to teach
students the sense of organization in classroom. For the books, the teacher asks them at the
beginning of the classroom to put their stuff in the desks so they will not interrupt students while
working. And once the teacher needed them to get the books out, she asks them to do that quietly.
While for the shelves at the back of the class, they are full of tools for Math, Science and Arabic
tools. The materials are available for the teacher when she needs it.

Moreover, it contains students books, radios, students files, and other materials for different activities.
For the walls, they are painted with nice and smooth colors so the teacher can add things on the
wall as she prefers without being concerned that it will be too much. Also, the front walls has the
classroom rules designed in an attractive way that helps them to memorize it.

Additionally, the displays at the back of the class shows the Math and Science activity, it has a very
attractive view with the seasons, and it is affective because it shows the number and students have
been adding the materials and sticked it in the cards. Also they display has students names and
some points "happy faces" have been put to students with great participation.

The assistive devices such as: computers and data show were in front of the classroom and they are
provided in each classroom in the school.

Post the typical weekly schedule for one group of students for all their classes.

Examine your MSTs lesson plans. Take pictures or collect samples to post in your portfolio.

- How does she write plans for the week?

My MST usually plans for her lessons weekly but as the school required from them to plan their lesson
daily. She plans by felling the plan sheet as in the picture below.
The plan sheet contains:

- Unit name
- The title of the lesson
- The Grade level
- The warming up
- The new concepts
- Results of learning
- The process of the lesson
- Evaluation
- Methods of teaching
- Activities and methods used
- 21 century skills
- Link with other subjects
- For the semester?
They have a sheet for the whole semester planning and the objectives required from them to achieve at the
end of each semester.
