ABSTRACT

The proposed design for this tetradecene plant is to produce a minimum of 100,000
metric tonnes/year of tetradecene in Nanjing Chemical Industry Park, China using a
maximum of RM 200 million. In design project one last year, the topics covered were mainly
process selection, market analysis, site location and energy & mass balance. Besides that,
the economic analysis and the environmental & safety considerations were lightly touched
upon.
There are 5 major equipments considered; heat exchanger, reactor, and three
distillation columns. The complete chemical and mechanical designs of these five
equipments were handled by each of the five members in this team. The AutoCad drawings
of the equipments were based dimensions calculated from the chemical and mechanical
designs.
Two topics were continued in detail from design project one; economic analysis and
environmental and safety considerations. Due considerations were given to the plant safety
and layout where detailed HAZOP was done on major equipments. Besides that, process
control and instrumentation were designed in detail.
The economic analysis was also done in such detail where various parts were
highlighted; the overall cost based on total capital cost and total manufacturing cost, rate of
return, payback period and even plant profitability. As with any plant, a big part that must be
taken into account is the waste treatment. In this project, waste treatment was assessed with
consideration given from energy and mass balance to preliminary cost of treatment process.
Lastly, one of the main topics worked on in this project is the process heat
integration. Process integration is an extremely important part to be taken into account when
building a plant. This is because when done right, process integration can significantly
reduce the duty of utilities used which will directly reduce the manufacturing cost of the plant.
Process integration is basically, efficiently reusing the energy already circulation in the plant
so that none of it is wasted. Comparisons between before and after heat integration were
done to show the advantages.
In conclusion, design project two is a more detailed design of a plant mainly based
on major equipments. It is basically the completion of designing a plant based on the work
done in design project one.
