ENZYMES AND ITS EFFECT

DATE: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 29, 2016
HONOR CODE: ON MY HONOR, I HAVE
NEITHER RECEIVED OR GIVEN ANY
UNAUTHORIZED AID ON THIS
ASSIGNMENT

INTRODUCTION
1. Enzymes are biological catalysts which appear in our stomach, our mouth in order
to help our body to run smoothly
2. Enzymes are an important factor in our body because it Enzymes are lifes great
facilitators. They create the conditions needed for biochemical reactions to
happen fast. Enzymes help the reaction action faster, therefore, it is called
catalyze. It catalyzes the reactions in every living things body.
3. Enzymes are affected by the temperature, pH, and some of the others factor such
as enzyme concentration, substrate concentration, and the presence of any
inhibitors or activators.
4. This lab experiment helps us to see and figure out how the enzymes work in the
different temperature ranges therefore we can understand clearly that temperature
can make a dramatically effect on enzymes. According to our experiment,
enzymes effect on the time and the amount of the bubbling in different range
temperature.
5. Enzyme is a catalyze which speed up the reaction with hydrogen peroxide.
Hydrogen peroxide can be manufactured in a number of different ways, but the
most common methods involve the reaction of oxygen with isopropyl alcohol and
anthraquinone. Hydrogen peroxide contains too much oxygen for the blood
leading to potential issues. When your skin absorbs hydrogen peroxide, it can
reduce the amount of fibroblasts, a particular cell that is imperative for cleaning
and repairing damaged tissue.
6. Hypothesis: If we use cold H20, there will not be much bubbles, but if we use hot
H20, there will be more bubbles than we have with cold water => Unless it is still
in a room temperature, there will be different amount of bubbles and different
reaction in a different temperature of H20

Materials
-

Liver
Hot Water (H20)
Ice
Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)
Bowl
Spoon/scooper
Temperature measurement
Time measurement

Procedure
-

Prepare for the lab by putting liver into 3 bowls by using a spoon or a scooper.
Prepare the hot water and cold water
Then, put three bowls into 3 boxes, one box contains hot water, one box contains
ice, one box we dont put anything in it.
Waiting until all 3 boxes reach the suitable temperature. The temperature of the
normal box will be around 25 degree Celsius, the hot box will be around 40-50
degree Celsius, and the cold box will be around 5-10 degree Celsius
Then, take out a piece of liver in each box, then adding Hydrogen Peroxide
(H2O2)
Use the time measurement and temperature measurement to measure and record
the data
The data that we have taken need to have 3 factors: the time and the temperature
and the amount that the liver bubbles.
After record once, do it 2 more times to make a record become more accurate
Then, clean up the area that we work, throw the trash away, wash your hand
carefully because liver and Hydrogen peroxide are pretty dirty.

3. To me, my observation is that with hot water, it took only 10 seconds to bubbles
and it bubbled with a large amount of bubbles
With cold water, it will take the longest time to bubbling with the smallest amount
of bubble
With room temperature, it happens in an average time, and it doesnt have much
bubbles as much as hot temperature but it has more bubbles than cold temperature.

DISCUSSION
1. The line goes down through the development of the temperature. The more
temperature, the less time it takes to bubble. The less temperature, it takes more
time to bubbles. Graphing the data helps us to summarize the growth and its trend
therefore we can figure out it is developing or not. It helps us to realize and see
the relationship between each section and each period of time.
2. It supports my hypothesis because in my hypothesis said that the higher
temperature, the more bubbles and the faster it takes to react.
3. Some errors that can effect our results are: we do the experiment with the wrong
temperature and we measure the wrong time.
4. We need to repeat 3 times because the more we do, the more accurate of the
results that we will have
5. The average of these trials with reflect directly the results because the average is
the medium of all 3 times combined, therefore, we will have the right results.

RESEARCH QUESTIONS:
1. Enzymes work perfectly with each other by using key-lock modeling. Enzymes
are catalyze because it helps the reaction run faster and smoother. When the
substrates go in the enzyme, they form an enzyme-substrate complex.
2. A change in pH could change the shape of hexokinase ( due to a physic theory,
hot will expanse, cold will shrink. Therefore, a change in pH will change the
shape of hexokinase. This change would possibly eliminate the ability of glucose
and ATP to bind to the active site on the enzyme. ( According to Quizlet)

REFLECTION
1. I have learned some new skills such as doing many things in a short amount of
time, I can record the data, see how they bubbles, measure the time and the
temperature. We now can know how to use the temperature measurement and
how to draw a chart and a table.
2. I like it because we can figure out how the enzyme works, but I really struggle
with the smell of the liver and how dirty is it. The only thing that challenging me
is the smell and how dirty the liver is
3. This experiment is a test on organization skills and how each team member work.
Each need to know what is there job and what they need to do. For example, one
will go and take the Hydrogen Hydroxide, one will go and wash the bowl, one
will take a liver and one will write down the record
4. We need to improve pretty much on the next lab experience because our team
work some time dont run smoothly. Sometimes, we dont understand each other,
but it can be solve and be better on the next time.
