Mobbingintheworkplacebypeersandmanagers:mobbingexperiencedby
nursesworkinginhealthcarefacilitiesinTurkeyanditseffectonnursesAim.
Thisresearchwasconductedasadescriptiveandcrosssectionalstudywiththepurpose
ofdeterminingthemobbingexperiencedbynurseswhoworkinhealthcarefacilitiesin
Turkey,itsemotional,socialandphysiologicaleffectsonthenursesandtheactionsthat
theindividualstaketoescapefromthemobbing.Background.
Thetermmobbing,whichincludesworkplaceterrorizing,pressure,frightening,belittling
andpsychoterror,isdefinedasthepresenceofsystematic,directed,unethical
communicationandantagonisticbehaviourbyoneormoreindividuals.Theseactions
thatoccurfrequentlyandcontinueforalongtimearethemostseriousandeffective
causesofworkplacestress.Thepersonwhoisthetargetofthemobbingisleftwithout
help,withoutprotectionandaloneintheworkplace.Individualswhoareexposedto
psychologicalabuseexperiencephysiological,psychologicalandsocialproblemsthatare
relatedtohighlevelsofstressandanxiety.Designandmethod.
Theresearchparticipantswere505nursesofwhom325(64%)workedinpublicand180
(36%)inprivatehospitals.Alloftheparticipantswerefemale.Aquestionnairedeveloped
bytheresearchersinthelightofinformationintheliteraturewasusedfordatacollection
andhadfoursectionsincludingtheparticipantsdemographiccharacteristicsand
questionsaskingaboutmobbingbehaviours,reactiontomobbingincidentsandactions
takentoescapefromthemobbing.ThedatawerecollectedbetweenOctoberand
December2005bygivinganenvelopetotheparticipantsandthencollectingthe
responsesintheclosedenvelope.Findings.
Theoverwhelmingmajority(865%)ofthenursesparticipatingintheresearchreported
facingmobbingbehaviourintheworkplaceinthelast12months.Thenursesworkingat
privatehospitalsfacedstatisticallysignificantlymoremobbingbehavioursthanthoseat
publichospitals(p002).Itwasdeterminedthatthenurseswhofacedmobbing
behavioursgavevariousphysiological,emotionalandsocialreactionstotheseincidents.
Themostcommonbehavioursexhibitedbytheparticipantstoescapemobbingwasto
workharderandbemoreorganizedandtoworkmorecarefullytoavoidcriticism.In
addition10%oftheparticipantsstatedthattheyconsidercommittingsuicide
sometimes.Relevancetoclinicalpractice.
Mobbingbehavioursintheworkplaceneedtobedefinedandappropriatepoliciesand
proceduresneedtobedevelopedandsharedwithallemployeestopreventthe
developmentofthesebehaviours.Inaddition,managersshouldadoptanopen
