Biography of the Composer
ikolai Rimsky-Korsakow
born in Tichvin (Novgorod) on 18 March
attended the Naval School in St Petersburg
he became acquainted with the composers Balakirev,
Cui, Mussorgsky and Borodin, who influenced his
development. “The Five’, including Rimsky-Korsakov
himself, were later dubbed the “The Mighty Hand-
ful’. Rimsky-Korsakov was the only one of the group
really to have studied the technique of composition.
he was made professor of instrumentation and com-
position at the St Petersburg Conservatoire
he left naval service, earning his living from then on
as a composer and a highly esteemed teacher (his
pupils included Tanayev, Gretchaninov, Glasunoy,
Respighi, Stravinsky, Prokofjev)
he died on his country estate at Lyubensk (near St
Petersburg) on 21 June
