Attending cues/Do Now (short activity to get students settled into the classroom):

TSW county by 10s and 5s as a math drill


Students will complete a 3 minute math

Anticipatory Set (lead into the topic):

TSW talk about subtraction and addition


TW show 8+2 and 28+2
TW ask, which problem is easier to solve, students will answer 8+2. TW explain its
because we have ones and it is easier to solve

Direct Instruction:

TW explain that SW learn how to break apart a number using place value
TW say, today we will learn how to work with tens and ones and solve math problems by
doing so
TW show how 25 can be broken into 20 and 5= 20+5, 37 can be 30+7 and so on

Guided Practice and Independent Practice:

Teacher will provide 3 examples of addition and three examples of subtraction as a


whole group seperately
