Name: Francilia Garcia
Date: November 8, 2016
NOTE: Please bold all your responses so nothing is missed when your work is assessed.
Terminology
Orient yourself to the following concepts related to mentoring through a quick google search and
defining these terms in your own words: (2 pts)

Mentor: Someone who can help guide you and has more experience than you.
Mentee: Someone who is advised or counseled by a mentor.
Protg: Someone who is guided or supported by a more experienced person.
Reciprocal mentoring: A relationship that is built than turned into a mentor and mentee.
Reverse mentoring: A development that helps less experienced employees learn from
more experienced employees.
Also, you will need to read the following article in preparation for the L4 activity:
Higgins, M. C., Kram, K. E. (2001). Reconceptualizing mentoring at work: A developmental
network perspective. Academy of Management Review 26(2), 264-288. Available at
http://www.jstor.org/stable/259122
Or through the ASU library:
http://search.proquest.com.ezproxy1.lib.asu.edu/docview/210951325/fulltextPDF/7873AD523A4
CCAPQ/12?accountid=4485
In the article, the authors seek to redefine mentoring by applying literature that views mentoring
as individuals receiving mentoring assistance from many people at any one point in time,
including senior colleagues, peers, family, and community members. Embracing this theory,
which incorporates social network research, may help you begin to establish a developmental
network that is conducive to the 21st century workplace, geared toward the goal of having strong
ties with diverse network groups. This type of developmental network is known as an
entrepreneurial typology.

TYPES OF MENTORING RELATIONSHIPS (8 pts)
Based on the Higgins and Kram article, what is the difference between a traditional mentoring
relationship and a developmental network? Provide at least 3 in-text citations from the Higgins
and Kram article. Add this resource to the reference list below. (minimum of 200 words)

In reading the article, I could distinguish between traditional mentoring relationship

and developmental network. As stated in the article, Traditional developmental networks
are made up of few developers who have an average, strong ties to the protg
(Higgns,2001). Meaning that traditional mentoring built on strong relationships with a
particular person in mind. They are more focused on one individual as opposed to other
types of mentoring that focus on multiple people at a time. They tend to keep close ties in
traditional mentoring, as stated in the article, Traditional, since having one strong
primary relationship is generally assumed to be the classic case of mentoring
(Higgins,2001). As stated in the article, Developmental network as the set of people a
protg names as taking an active interest in and action to advance the protgs career by
providing developmental assistance (Higgins,2001). When you look at both traditional
and developmental mentoring you can see that one requires less individuals in their
network. Developmental mentoring is helping build the individuals network and
relationships. They focus on developing their career and person related skills. In traditional
mentoring, they focus just on one protg career and their psychological being. It more
individually tailored to their needs.

influential in supporting career change, personal learning, organizational commitment, and/or
work satisfaction? Include in-text citations to at least 3 of the information sources from the
Higgins and Kram article and 1 (or more) outside resource. Add these sources to the reference
list below. (300-400 words) (10 pts):
One of the mentors that has had a lasting impact on my development is my
manager Katy Hyde, I have worked by her side for the last four years and within in that
time I have learned a wealth of knowledge. She has pushed me from starting off as a
barista at Starbucks to eventually becoming a shift supervisor. Even though I reluctant to
pursue a career with Starbucks she reminded me of the benefits a leadership position
would not only help me grow as an individual but for my future. She has taught me great
communication skills along with be a great role model as a leader herself taking on so
much responsibility in running two stores. She has showed me how to balance my work
life and personal life as well. She is the one who motivated me when Starbucks
introduced their college achievement plan and worked so well with me and my schedule
for me to pursue my dream of graduating college. Through her determination she has
showed me what it means to stand by the company you for work, she loves her job and
you can see it through her work and leadership skills she has taught all of us. As stated
in the article, Receiving career assistance from a variety of developers should increase
the individuals information, resources, and access to a variety of career possibilities
(Higgins,2001). Katy has helped me through my struggles and decision on finding out
how I will be successful in my future target job, although it wouldnt be with Starbucks
she wants me to find happiness in my future career. She has also helped me in
developing my own personal learning, she has increased my professional identify and
taught me how to use my talents at work i.e. my leaderships and organizational skills. In
the article is states, individuals with strong tie developmental relationships will
experience more personal learning than those with weak tie relationships
(Higgins,2001).
