My Story
‘The most significant event that shaped my literacy narrative would have to be leaming
about the library summer reading program and joining it every summer. Going to the summer
reading program every year in middle school really made me fall in love with reading for hours
Straight. During the long hot summer days it was really boring for me and my brother: I
remember going swimming together, riding our bikes, and trying really hard to fill our time with
summer activities; however, at times the long hot days would go so siow. 42 iS oie
One day my mom took us to the library to check out some books and movies, and we saw
all the kids excited about this event. My mom, with her slight accent, asked the librarian about
the event that is going on. The librarian, excited to talk to my mom about it and to have more
‘kids join; explained that the 2009 summer reading program, a program that occurs once a week
during the summer full of activities to help kids become excited about reading, is starting and
that she should sign us up. My mom really loved the idea of the program so she signed both me
and my brother up, ignoring our protests. la tha (
The frst day I went tothe program I did not know what to expect, as I walked in through
the entrance of the event room I was first hit with the amazing smell of pizza, looking around 1
was astonished atthe numberof kids my age and older attended the program. Everyone was
talking, eating, and reading; it made me truly excited about going every week. As I sat downa
woman with average height and a pixie hair cut, asked me if this was my first time joining theAbualeinan2
program. As I nodded she handed me an hourly time sheet and a scavenger hunt worksheet. She
explained to me that today's activity is going to be a scavenger hunt and to always bring my time
sheet and mark the amount of hours I read on it so I can win the cool Prizes. Excited about the
sound of prizes, I nodded and grabbed a slice of pizza and got to know the People sitting at my

table. Going to the summer reading program that first day lead me to read(13 gifts” Which was }raWcize4
