INTO (intro event or hook, driving question)

Visual Thinking Strategies: T. will show students a black and white image of
Native Americans sitting in a circle.
Students will use talking chips strategy to discuss the photo with members in
their group.
-What is going on in the picture?
-What do you see that makes you say that?
-What more can we find?
Driving question- How can we as a Native American tribe survive in
California?

THROUGH (cycle of inquiry, formative assessment/checking for

understanding)
Students will be placed in groups and will be given a specific tribe located in
different areas in California. (Coast, central valley, mountain, and desert)
T. will review the different geographies by doing a picture file with students.
T. will use projector to project four images from each of the regions. T. and
students will engage in class discussion about each region. (climate,
topography, resources)
Research in groups: (student driven)
-Students will research their specific tribe and how the physical geography
caused them to adapt to that environment.
(They will use the internet to find their information.)
They will be encouraged to look for:
-How did they obtain their food? or What foods did they eat?
-What did they wear?
-What tools did they have or make?
But students should include other details in their findings.
Quick Write:
-What is one way your tribe adapted to your physical geography?

BEYOND (application or presentation of learning, summative

assessment)

Students will then use their information to create a Ted Talk to present to the
class. Each student in the group will represent a member of the tribe. As a
group, they will communicate how the Native Americans survived in their
environment. They will write a script using their research and each student
will have a part in the script writing and recording.
They will then record their Ted Talk with a video camera and can use visuals,
pictures and props.
