Writing Prompt #2
My writing skills didnt drastically improve until after I enter Mrs. Ledfords class. She
was a larger woman with an obsession for Beyonce. She was the AP English Literature teacher in
my junior year of high school. I knew that my literacy skills needed improvement. At the time I
didnt see any change in my writing skills in any of my other English class, therefore I thought
by taking this AP class I would finally know how to write a paper properly, how to outline, and
other skills of writing that I had yet to encounter. Mrs. Ledford taught me great deal about
writing and how to read. Of course, I knew how to read but I never annotated before that time.
Annotating is important because it brings out the main ideas of the paragraph or simply highlight
phrases and words that stood out. When annotating you have a better understanding of what you
are reading.
Mrs. Ledford also taught me how to write for different purposes. She taught me how to
write an argumentative paper, a narrative paper, and a synthesis paper. When I learned the
different styles of writing I remember thinking to myself, Why did it take so long for me to
finally enjoy some kind of writing. When writing papers before this class I never really outlined
because I did not know how to. Mrs. Ledford guided us on how to outline, research, and edit
other papers. Outlining is extremely helpful. Once I knew how to write an outline before writing
my paper wasnt like trying to assemble an IKEA furniture without instruction manuals anymore
but rather like having a cheat sheet for a test. I loved it. In my AP English Literature class, it

changed the my idea of Englishs difficulty. English wasnt an easy A anymore and I had to work
on it but by the end of the class I learned so much. We wrote several papers, read a couple of
books, and discussed a lot more in class. That class will always be the class that I look back on
and know that was where my literacy learning drastically improved.
