PART 1: MENTOR
What is a mentor (definition)? What are the responsibilities of a mentor? What qualities should a mentor
possess?
A mentor is a person who guides and advises a less experienced person (Merriam-Webster, 2015). The
less experienced person can potentially be younger than the mentor (Merriam-Webster, 2015).
Responsibilities of a mentor:
- Stay up to date on the progress of the mentee
- To advise the mentee how to improve
- To motivate the mentee
- To give constructive criticism
- To be a reliable resource for the mentee
- To be supportive to the mentee
Qualities of a mentor:
- The mentor has discretion: the mentor can be trusted with sensitive information and does not
break the confidence of his/her mentee (Andersen, 2014)
- Curiosity of mentees progress, how mentee is using mentors guidance (Andersen, 2014)
- Knowledgeable of certain concepts in the field
- Confident in their opinions and guidance to the mentee
- Patient with mentee
- Charismatic (i.e. likeable, easy-going, to encourage openness from the mentee)
- Respectful
- Responsible: replies to the mentee in a timely manner, coming prepared to meetings with the
mentee
- Honest
- Empathetic

According to Soanes & Stevenson (2009), a mentee is a person who is advised, trained, or counselled by
a mentor. This person has less experience and is paired up with a mentor to learn from him/her. The
mentee looks up to the mentor for guidance and expertise in a certain field.
Responsibilities of the mentee:
- To report to the mentor about his/her progress
- Seek guidance and feedback (positive/negative) from the mentor
- Ask help when needed
- To listen and respond to suggestions from the mentor
- To make time to meet up with mentor (have good time management skills)
- Learn from own experiences and take mentors advice
Qualities of the mentee:
- Open-minded to new ideas and experiences in the field
- Patient with own progress
- Honest
- Interactive with the mentor
- Responsible
- Flexible to scheduling meetings with the mentor
- Respectful
PART 3: MENTORSHIP
How is a mentorship relationship built? What are the potential benefits of a mentorship relationship for
the mentor? For the mentee? What are the potential challenges of having a successful mentorship
relationship?
Mentorship relationship can be built through mutual respect and establishing clear boundaries (i.e.
making a professional relationship with your mentor).
Benefits for the mentor:
- Build experience in teaching and interacting with other members of the field
- Review prior knowledge
- Allows them to network with other members in the field
- Allows them to be critical of his/her own thinking
- Improves standards in the field by guiding less-experienced members
Benefits for the mentee:
- Support in a new environment
- New experience
- Network with more experienced members in the field
- Obtains a valuable resource in the field
- Learn from the mistakes of the mentors and make their own decisions based on them
- Motivated to work in the field, as well as encouragement to continue in the field
Challenges of a successful mentorship relationship:
- Mentee might become dependent on mentor
- Scheduling conflicts
- Conflicting dual relationships
- Lack of trust
- Poor/No communication

Conflicting opinions or views about certain situations (i.e. different views on how to approach
