Mt.Veeder, Atlas Peak and St. Helena. Some of Napas oldest wine
caves are here, and a refurbishment of these historic spaces was
completed just after a private Hospitality Center joined the winery.
Still, through many years, it was possible to see that something special
was happening, but no public tasting room was open. Until now.
A gentle road approaches the complex through Marios Vineyard,
with notable Cabernet Sauvignon framed by mature oaks along the
roadway. There are 22 acres of estate vineyards setting the stage. A
new/old appearing agrarian complex doesnt begin to hint at what lies
ahead through the tasting room doors. A traditional large round
Italianate fountain is rimmed by extensive gardens with tall Canary
Island palms, California-native valley oaks, live and cork oaks
alongside ornamental trees such as Dogwoods, Pistache and Japanese
Maple. Drought-tolerant plant selections create restful spaces where
teak benches are artistic statements by themselves and while this may
sound a bit silly, even the swirling garbage receptacle is unique and
memorable. The tasting room is well set back from Highway 29, and
its elevated positioning allows for dramatic views of surrounding
vineyards. Both Tesla and universal charging stations are provided,
and theres likely no better place to plug in and recharge both your
transport and yourself.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
California, near the original Jacuzzi ranch, and moved in
the 1990s to Sonoma. They made their mark with Rhonestyle varietals and Zinfandel. In 2009, as a tribute to
Valeriano, who taught his grandson the skills and secrets of
old-school Italian winemaking, they opened Jacuzzi Family
Vineyards across the street.
There are two tasting rooms in the Jacuzzi villa. On the
left is a vast variety of Italian-style wines that include
Montepulciano, Barbera, Nebbiolo, Moscato, Arneis and
Pinot Grigio. On the right is a stunning array of extra virgin
olive oils and balsamic made on site. Visitors may immerse
themselves in the olive oil process with a viewing window
to live production, as well as by sampling oils, tapenades
and other culinary delights. The Olive Press is the most
awarded artisan olive oil producer in North America and
has secured first place in various international competitions
rivaling European makers with centuries of experience.
Visitors are invited to enjoy complimentary tasting
while experiencing the joy of shopping in Sonomas relaxed
wine country. Hand-curated offerings provide guests with
one-of-a-kind choices ranging from jewelry, to wine
accessories, to exclusive gift packs.
The holiday season would not be complete without a

Etude Wines
Doing Nothing Can Be Everything
The practice of allowing a vineyard to simply just be to express its
character in the final wines through minimal intervention during the growing
process, is not just a trendy notion for the team at Etude Wines, its the only
mantra Winemaker Jon Priest and his team live by. Their approach to crafting
exquisite, ultra-premium wines through the expression of each vineyards
unique terroir may seem common place among wineries today, however this
methodology of doing nothing can be everything has been a part of Etudes
DNA since it was founded back in 1982. The winery and vineyards are located in
the cooler region of Carneros in southern Napa Valley home to singlevineyard Pinot Noirs and bright, fruit-forward whites like Pinot Gris, Pinot
Blanc and Chardonnay with their vineyard-designate Cabernet Sauvignon
hailing from warmer sites in the upper part of the valley. Each of the varying
microclimates yields Bordeaux- and Burgundian-style wines of elegance and
structure, yet balanced by the lush, opulent fruit found only here in California,
garnering worldwide praise with each vintage produced.
If you grow the grapes in the right place, and employ superior farming
techniques, theres less of a need for intervention in the winery.

Pinot Noir expresses its sense of place more so than any other wine varietal. With Pinot, its
all about the clone, and more importantly, its vineyard. In The Study of Pinot Tasting, not
only will you discover what makes Pinot so special, and how the regional differences play up
each wines aromas and flavors, but thanks to the marvels of science, this super high-tech
(and ber- cool) tasting allows you to virtually explore three vineyard sites through a Virtual
Reality headset while you taste the wines from those specific vineyards. During the hour-long
tasting, your host will offer information on their estate vineyards in Carneros, Sonoma Coast,
Willamette Valley and Santa Barbara County, and youll virtually-visit the Deer Camp,
Temblor and Heirloom Vineyards with 360 panoramic views of each site and its surrounding
topography. This VR tasting is a first of its kind in the valley and a must-do for anyone
wanting to connect the taste and place of Pinot Noir.

Tasting Notes
2012 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley, Calandrelli Vineyard
The 2012 vintage was a fantastic year, marked with early bud break
and a long growing season, making it an especially great year for
Pinot Noir. This vintage Pinot Noir opens with aromas of
boysenberry, black cherry, licorice, caramel and black tea. The
balanced palate follows with solid notes of boysenberry and
blackberry, cedar spice, black tea, hints of sweet tobacco, caramel
and cocoa. While great now, this Pinot Noir will reward and age

2013 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley, Calandrelli Vineyard
Another great year for Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. Aromas
jump out of the glass with notes of fresh plum, boysenberry,
caramel, dried blackberry and hints of cola. The palate opens with
creamy notes of boysenberry syrup, plums and fresh figs with
intriguing aromatics of fall spices, accompanied by a long finish. The
2013 Pinot should age nicely over the next three to seven years, and
pairs well with steak au poivre, beef bourgogne and mushroom
risotto. Only 70 cases were produced.
2014 Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley, Calandrelli Vineyard
On the heels of previous years, the 2014 vintage saw high quality
fruit resulting from a long and steady growing season. Generous
aromas begin with ripe plum, raspberry, rhubarb pies and maple

Matanzas Creek hosts several events that bring out the best of each season,
highlighting the wines that they are so proud to call their own. From Saturday,
December 3, at 10:00 a.m. to Sunday, December 4, at 4:00 p.m., Matanzas
Creek Winery will have live music, small bites, Matanzas Creek wines, lavender
crafts, gift wrapping and plenty of holiday cheer for $20 per person.
Let the road take you to Matanzas Creek Winery, a place that offers something for the wine lover, the gardener and the epicurian. Matanzas Creek, which
put the bucolic east Santa Rosa neighborhood of Bennett Valley on the map,
took its name from the creek that drains away the runoff in the valley. The area
enjoys a unique microclimate among North Coast appellations, with cooling
influences from several frontsthe Russian River Valley and Petaluma Gap
from the west and southwest, and the San Pablo Bay to the south and southeast.
Matanzas Creek produces a wide range of wines that reflect the viticultural
diversity of Bennett Valley and Sonoma County. Currently the winery is showcasing the Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Malbec and
Cabernet Sauvignon.

If you plan to take wine home with you, either in the car or on
a plane, buy a cardboard box with Styrofoam wine inserts. Fill it
during the day and this keeps wine from rolling around in the
trunk.
Check out the smaller wineries. It is a revelation.
Take notes on the wines you most enjoyed.
Take advantage of tours when the winery offers them, but keep
in mind that they take anywhere from 20 minutes to well over an
hour, so one a day is plenty.
Buy wines that you can only find at the winery. These often include smaller (375 ml) bottles of limited production ports or
dessert wines. Dont buy a wine you can get at a supermarket back
home.
Dont give too much thought to ratings and vintages. Its like
art: if you like it, its a good wine. It is as simple as that.
Remember that you dont have to do the driving. It takes no
more than a phone call to rent anything from a Town Car or restored Packard convertible to stretch limos and a 20-passenger bus.
All have drivers that will stow your wine for you and the local companies know the area. Tell the transportation company what you
have in mind and listen to their advice. They know the territory
and the people and personalities.
Know your limits. If you get close to it let others taste and you
can listen. It beats ending the day in a blur, and if need be calling
a taxi is cheaper than the alternative.
And if at a seated tasting, dont be afraid to leave a gratuity. Its
more than worth the five or ten dollars to get wisdom and wine
and a great time.
By Charles Neave
Do the Math
One of the questions most asked when it comes to wine is how much of this does it take to make that, and so on. We wont pretend that its simple, but here are some industry statistics that will give a pretty good
answer to that query. As with anything agricultural, of course, they are all based on countless variables when it comes to acre yields, but this is a good starting point. The rest of the information varies little if at all.

pairing, and wine tasting experiences for both the wine novice and

The Restaurant at Wente Vineyards uses locally grown organic
ingredients and features ingredient-driven California wine country
cuisine. While the menu holds its foundation in American dishes, it is
influenced by French and Italian provincial cuisine. The seasonal menu
changes daily, utilizing produce from The Restaurants organic garden.
Wente Vineyards is also the only winery in Livermore Valley to
offer a championship 18-hole public golf course.
Family, food, entertainment, and of course, the wines beckon
visitors to experience the legacy that is Wente Vineyards.
VASCO ROAD
Livermore Valley, with its rich heritage and variety of wine tasting
experiences, should be a top destination that people consider when
planning their next wine country getaway. As the countrys oldest,
continuously operated, family-owned winery and Californias First
Family of Chardonnay, Wente Vineyards would be a good place to
start the journey. The winery, led by fourth and fifth generation family
members, has clearly proven their leadership both in winegrowing
and in being one of Californias premier wine country destinations.
