Displacement

The displacement or displacement

tonnage of a ship is the ship's weight. The
name reects the fact that it is measured
indirectly, by rst calcula@ng the volume of
water displaced by the ship, and then
calcula@ng the weight of that water. By
Archimedes' principle, this is also the
weight of the ship.

Archimedes Principle

Displacement

Archimedes's principle indicates that the

upward buoyant force that is exerted on a
body immersed in a uid, whether fully or
par@ally submerged, is equal to the weight
of the uid that the body displaces and it
acts in the upward direc@on at the centre
of mass of the displaced uid. Archimedes'
principle is a law of physics fundamental to
uid mechanics. It was formulated by
Archimedes of Syracuse.

Any object, wholly or par@ally immersed in

a uid, is buoyed up by a force equal to
the weight of the uid displaced by the
object.

Displacement Symbol

Light Displacement

(boldface) is the symbol for

displacement.

the weight of a ship with all its permanent equipment,

excluding the weight of cargo, persons, ballast, dunnage, and
fuel, but usually including the weight of permanent ballast and
water used to operate steam machinery.

Load DIsplacement
the weight of water displaced by a ship when laden.

Deadweight
Deadweight tonnage is a measure of a vessel's weight carrying
capacity, and does not include the weight of the ship itself

Tonnage Per Centimeter

(TPC) is a measure of the amount of mass,
in tonnes, which is be required to change a
vessels draught by one cen@metre. The
value of TPC is not sta@c, it varies with a
vessels condi@on of load.
TPC = (WPA 100) x

Deadweight Tonnage
Deadweight tonnage (oVen abbreviated as
DWT, for deadweight tonnes) is the
displacement at any loaded condi@on
minus the lightship weight. It includes the
crew, passengers, cargo, fuel, water, and
stores. Like displacement, it is oVen
expressed in long tons or in metric tons.
